I was curious to see how many of you have had to take a test to get a job. From what I can gather, this appears to be more common in the public as opposed to private sector.

Examples: College degree required (lots of tests, there); military technical job (prior experience & testing was essential for consideration by a selection board of military personnel); other 'careers' that required certification(s) & prior testing-to be seriously considered.

I took one (I'm in Sales) and on purpose made it look like I had horrible people skills and was shy, the direct opposite of me. My mentor was hiring me so he just laughed knowing that I'd screw with corporate. |

I only had to take a drug test to get my job. And then a few weeks ago in Atlanta I had to take a test to be a JDA Certified Space Planner. I got a 92%. I was nervous, at first, because I hadnt taken a test in about 10 years!

| | | | When I was hiring people for machine shop jobs I kept a 0~1" mic and a set of 6" dial calipers on my desk along with a few odds and ends of finished pieces, drops, nuts, bolts, etc., pretty much any small, odd item I found orphaned around the shop. At some point in the interview I'd hand the applicant one of the pieces and ask them to measure it for me.
You would be surprised how many folks claim to be machinists who can't use a mic or calipers.

| | | | Yes I've had to take all sorts of tests when applying for certain jobs. Besides physicals, and psychological profiling tests, I've done math tests, basic computer and clerical skills testing and mechanical aptitude testing to name a few. |

Did the analysis in about 5 minutes and the next 25 minutes making it pretty until I presented it in my interview.
That, and a drug test.
