Yeah. She was a drop dead Filipina chick. I couldn't hang with her for very long. She had other problems too.

Just look at any number of the posts here on TB and you'll see it.

Yes, I have. Don't worry guys, no rants or anything like that.

It's actually a problem in the Asian American (AA) community. Blacks and Hispanics generally have their own "subculture" within the larger "American" (mainstream) culture. Asian Americans don't really have a distinct "Asian American" culture. I have read that AAs almost mirror Whites in their buying and entertainment habits. Add that to an already small population (nationally about 5 percent) of AAs, and you have no market niche.

How does this factor into self-hatred? Because many AA kids grow up without a strong cultural influence, it leads to some confusion and identity problems. I'll use myself as an example:

When I was in elementary school and middle school, I HATED being of Asian decent. I thought, "why was I born Asian?! If I weren't Asian, I wouldn't have kids making karate noises, calling me slurs, pulling their eyes back to mock me...". I hated the fact that I was so "different" from the other kids. I hated the fact that my hair was dark and my eyes were slanted and brown. I hated that I wasn't like my friends. In middle school I would laugh at racist jokes about Asians and even make them myself; by doing this I thought I could somehow fit in. All it did was make me a loser. Big time.

Eventually as I got older I did some research into my heritage, talked to some people who were in the same proverbial boat, and realized that I should be proud of who and what I am.

Unfortunately, some people never get to that point (though I would say the majority probably do) and carry some serious emotional baggage throughout adulthood. Maki made mention of a Filipina woman he knew; it seems that Asian American self-hate hits more women than man; I'm not sure why--it could just be the difference in the way men and women handle and perceive things. But I have met many Asian American girls who vehemently refuse to date Asian American guys, and have a "white is right" mentality. They give stereotypical reasons like "oh they're too short", "they're ALL nerds", "they have small penises" etc (even though they've never dated one before). But these excuses are just that: excuses used to justify their auto-racism and insecurities. When people with self-racism see other people of their race, they see a reflection of themselves, and everything they hate about themselves. I used to get angry when I heard about these girls, but now I just feel bad for them. I will also add that despite my threads I've made about Asian men having less luck with women, almost all of the few girls I've been with have been White; I've only been with one Asian girl.

And that's really all I have about that. Feel free to PM me if you have anything to add that might derail this thread.

I have met black people before who have been incredibly derogatory of their own race. It's certainly an odd experience, listening to them insulting people of their own colour.

I have a Filipino friend that ALWAYS makes wise cracks about his race, to the point it gets a bit uncomfortable.

So, when does self-deprecation become self-loathing?

It's a fine line; I do make Asian jokes sometimes, but usually in a satirical and ironic way to show the ridiculousness of stereotypes and racism. When people actually start seriously bashing people of their own race and feeling ashamed and inferior, maybe saying things like "I wish I wasnt _____", then there's a problem.

White guilt seems to be the 'in' thing these days. God help you if you're male, too.

Should I be ashamed to be a white male?

Spend ridiculous amounts of money upgrading their cars while they're struggling on welfare... don't get an education and work in crap jobs for their entire lives... look DOWN on people who actually do get an education... sell drugs, be gangbangers, etc.
