Yes, 20 years ago

I was spraying the finish on kitchen cabinets. My boss worked me too hard. I cracked, & left. IIRC, I tossed an F-bomb or two.

Not bad, but I was hoping for more of a "the-floodgates-have-opened-and-ye-shall-feel-the-wrath" kinda thing.

Yep!

I was hired as a temporary Dishwasher. I was promised when I was hired that I'd be promoted in less than a month.

2 months went by and still no promotion. So I questioned the manager.
He said that he was sorry and forgot that they hired me as a line cook. And that they hired someone else. But, I'd be promoted to PREP cook in the meantime.

2 months later, still no promotion to Prep Cook.
So I asked and the same deal happened.
At this point, I got a really good friendship with the guys. I was pretty much the Head Dishwasher, which isn't saying much, so I didn't quit, cause I liked all the people.

3 months pass, and still no promotion. But at this point, I help on line to cook when they're short, I do a lot of prep work. I basically did dishwasher, Prep Cook, and Line Cook.
STILL no promotion. So I asked and he said "Well, Mark. to be honest, we don't need you on line right now"

3 days later was Labour Day, so we were PACKED (This is a very famous restaurant in the world, and it just so happens it was heart of the tourist area in Niagara Falls) So, I asked again and was told the same thing, but he was much snippier.

So that night, during rush hour, I was working alone and pissed off, so I walked over to the head cook, who I really got along with, and asked when he was off work. He said in one hour.
I asked because I didn't want him to stay to do the dishes.
So right after, I walked out of the restaurant and never came back.

I don't like to go back there- it was actually very stressful. This particular boss seemed to enjoy driving people beyond their limits; I thrived for awhile under pretty intense pressure. I took pride in not cracking, as well as putting out a lot of work. I thought I was different(from the other *quitters*); I was/am not. I also thought the boss felt I was worth keeping around; he didn't. The feeling of 'Aaaaaah' when I finally walked out was one of huge relief.

Yup, one time:

I was a residential/commercial/auto window tinter for a small shop just outside of Orlando, FL back in the early/mid 90's.

One Saturday afternoon, I go out on a residential installation (mind you, my day OFF), using my own vehicle, use the business gas card to put $5 of gas in my car, toss the business cellphone (one of those old Motorola BRICKS) in my tool kit, and off I go.

I finish the job, head from the job to my grandmother's house to deal with some work around her place that needed to be attended to. On the way, I turn off the cellphone - hey, it's my day off, I've done my good deed, right? Electronic leash - OFF.

So, the business owner, who I left a message for when I finished the job, decides that since I didn't immediately run straight back to his office with the paperwork and materials he has some right to be P!$$ED off at me, and is unable to raise me on the cellphone, calls my house.

I'm not there. My (then first) wife is not there. Her sister, who is sharing the house with us (it's a BIG place), answers the phone.

Soon-to-be-ex-boss immediately launches into an expletive-laced tirade at sister-in-law, leaving her in tears.

She knows I'm at grandma's doing stuff, so calls over to let me know what happened, still in tears. After she finished the story, I calmly finish the work for my grandmother, get back in my car, drive to @$$hat's house, back into his driveway, open the back of my vehicle (the one I've been driving on his jobs for 2 years without compensation), toss his materials and ladders onto his driveway, right in front of him, without saying a word, and drive off.

...you'd THINK he got the message.

When I don't show up for work Monday (I've already got another job by then - I had over 15 years experience! ), he calls the house, leaves a message on my answering machine:

"Hey look man, I know you're upset, and I know I can be an @$$hole at times, but we have work to do today, so, when are you coming in?"

Dude, you can't BE an @$$hole sometimes, you ARE an @$$hole.

I never spoke to that dude again, just left a message on the business answering machine that night telling him to mail me my last check (or my lawyer would be in touch), and to never again attempt to contact me or any family member in any way, lest I file a harassment charge with the local police...

...he got it then.

There was another time that was sort of funny, but I can't share that one here...

Here's some advice:

Find another job, then politely tell mom you found a better job, and give her 2 weeks notice.

Working for family is always tough.

Tell her you would like to be a problem solver without all the rage coming back at you that has nothing to do with solving problems.

Nope. I've had my frustrations about one job I worked, but I just quit, and gave them two weeks to sort out me leaving. Me leaving was good enough, as it thoroghly screwed the place for a good two months while they tried to find a replacement.
Key to the story? I knew it would screw them over that badly .

working in a warehouse at the shipping departement, we had a huge and I mean huge shipment, the forklift guys where supposed to bring all the boxes to the shipping area so they could be scan and get them ready to go, told the guys to get moving it was getting late, the answer I got was "who the hell are you?" well UPS guy shows up and the shipment is not ready, at the last minute they expect me to take care of it and get it ready, the supervisor starts to give me a lot of crap about it and I just blew up!!! Just left the place and they just stood there wondering how to operate the computer.

I had a job like that.

I was audio head at a decent-sized performing arts center, and the boss was the RUDEST piece of donkey crap you've ever met. 4-letter outbursts daily, red-faced screaming, you name it.

I finally snapped one night and gave my two weeks right as we were moving into 6 weeks of almost daily road shows through the venue.

I loved hearing after the fact that he had a couple of producers blow their tops at him over my not being there when their show came into the place.

That man is a waste of blood. His inadequacy issues manifest as anger, and I don't have time for losers like that anymore in my life. I got a pleading call to come back and help with a major show about 2 months after I quit, and I let him have it with both barrels. I know they say to never burn a bridge, but it felt SO. *******. GOOD.

Nope. I've blown up on the job (not proud moments), but everytime I've quit "on the spot" I let it sit below the surface.

i didn't blow up, since it was my first job and i was a little meek (15/16 years old) but i definitely quit in disgust. i was working as a dishwasher at a really popular deli, and when i was hired i was working for the best manager i ever had... responsible, hard working, a good leader, but he wasn't a hardass, he joked around a lot and took the hardest jobs for himself and was generally one of the nicest guys i've ever worked for. but the owner of the store was this woman who seems often on the brink of an aneurysm... her entire family and especially her kids are shockingly rude and i can see why her husband divorced her bitter and vindictive ass. anyway, she would drive this manager insane with all sorts of inane details that were totally unnecessary and scream about it the whole time; this manager we had would protect us from her and bear the brunt of her insanity. finally one day she asked him to come in on his weekend to run a seminar for other managers, without pay, and he walked off the job, leaving a very polite note that explained how he was utterly fed up with the boss' attitude and thanking us for being such a great crew.

after that the boss left us alone for a long while (she has more than one store) and we ran the shop through staff seniority without a manager. there was a lot of food theft and we slacked off quite a bit, lots of work didn't get done, and there was little leadership, but it was a fun place to work and we all got along quite well. the store was still making comfortable profit. eventually the boss tried out a series of managers, all of which quit on the demo day or never took the job because of her. meanwhile a lot of the old staff were quitting; without a manager around the boss would periodically come in and reorganize the store for no reason besides some harebrained idea she'd gotten out of "ergonomics". eventually one guy showed up, quite young, fresh out of business school, and i was told to train him, since i was now one of the most senior employees at the store (A DISHWASHER who had never received a pay raise or employee review). i showed him how to stock the freezer, how the dishwasher works, blah blah, and the next day he comes in and reminds me that i need to stock the freezer with First In, First Out. When I had just explained it the day before.

Left a note and walked off the job. Got my last cheque in the mail.

Nope. Almost reached the point many times, but never have quit.
I've definitely let superiors know when I've had enough crap.
I know I'm a great employee and **** 'em if they don't think my work is good enough.

I always think of the line Billy Joel said at the end of his concerts; "Don't take no **** offa anybody"

I didn't quit out of this, but when I was working in high school, I worked the student shift in a local factory building hand-built industrial starters. My direct supervisor was one of the best people to work for and the guys that owned the place were amazing as well (and family friends), the guy that was right above my supervisor was one of the biggest holes that I have ever met in my life. Yelling at everyone for everything, rude and everyone was scared of him. Not me though. One day I had enough of him yelling at me for making me to do this one job that was supposed to be split between all the students for the 8th week in a row (it got done once a week). He was yelling and swearing at me, I let him have it right back, only worse. I unleashed with everything that I could think of, including many things that I don't want to admit that I said. He stormed off and left for the day. I got handshakes from everyone that worked there, including two of the owners. He then tried to fire me, but I talked my way out of it and got a raise. He also never yelled at me again.

I've got that little incident penciled in for when all of the resumes I've been sending out for the last two months pays off. I'll try to do the classy, Homer Simpsonesque thing and play my boss' head like a bongo on my way out, but she's built like the love child of an NFL linebacker and a giant, Japanese fighting robot. Doesn't help that she's a conniving, power hungry, self-hating, menopausal psychopath.

I'll start a thread for when that day comes.

You better not. In these days of the internet, that thread could come back to haunt you along with the things you just said about her.
