Postal costs went up a penny to 42 cents, and there you are with a bill or other letter or two you want to mail.
You have almost a whole book of 41 cent stamps. So what do you do? Get in the car and drive to the Post Office for a book of 1 cent stamps, for which you'll burn up more gas than it's worth?
Or do you just say "f-it", pop two 41's on each letter and dump 'em in the mailbox on the corner?
Decisions....

As soon as the USPS started selling the "Forever" stamps, I loaded up on 'em. Buy 'em 100 at a time. Never again need to worry about this issue, if I buy 100 at .41, use 3, and the rate goes to .42, I don't care, just use the same stamp today that I did yesterday.
Best thing the USPS ever did.

You never know, knowing USPS it could happen.
But really they are a great idea, I know that we loaded up on them here at my work.

However, it strains belief that some people can't figure them out. I was in the post office a month ago and listened to the clerk patiently explain to someone that the stamp was ALWAYS good for first class postage, even if the rate went up. It took him about 2 minutes to get the idea across. The lady stood there and listened, but the idea just didn't register until he pounded it in - and from her expression, I'll bet she forgot what he said as she cleared the door.
The scary part is that the recipient of the explanation gets to vote. Siiiiigh.....
