Armondo Galarraga was throwing a perfect game, 26 Indians up, 26 Indians down. The last batter, Jason Donald, hit an infield grounder that was easily playable. It was thrown to first and he was CLEARLY OUT after the replay showed at least a 1 step gap between Galarraga's foot with ball in glove and Donald's foot. However, Jim FREAKIN' Joyce, the first base umpire, totally robbed him of a PERFECT GAME on the last out of the game. Makes me sick as a Tigers fan. He totally had that perfect game and the idiot ump made the worst call in Detroit Tigers history.

You don't have to be a fan of the particular team to appreciate possibly THE most amazing feat the game has to offer. I know I go against the grain in this, but as a Braves fan, if I were to attend a Braves game and the opposing pitcher had a PG going into the 9th, I'd DEFINITELY be cheering for him (unless it were a key playoff game ).

None of us were Tigers fans either but it was horrible to see a guy robbed of a perfect game.

Either that or he got caught up in all the excitement.

This just goes into the thread of MLB umpires stepping into the play of the game way too much in the past few weeks. First you have the ejections in Chicago, then Roy Oswalt getting ejected for incredibly dumb reasons, and now this. Granted Joyce was doing his job but still, I'd like to see some revisions to the umpire regulation process.
Sort of begs the question...

There have only been 20 Perfect games in the history of the Sport. To deny a guy a place in the HOF on a pathetic call is ridiculous. The Tigers should sue!
I thought I saw that umpire at game two of the Red Wings-Sharks series too.
The Umpire has admitted he blew the call "bad."

But Galarraga pitched a great game and handled it very well. The Tigers needed a win and Galarraga gave them that and more.

It would have no effect on the outcome of the game (the hitter would have an ever-so-slightly lower batting average) and it would reflect what actually happened and how significant of an achievement it was.
If I was in the pitcher's shoes, I would be fuuuuuuurious

The ump should get fired as I believe he's blown other major calls i the past. I was at the fitness center and everyone stopped to watch while they cut over from the Cards/Red game. The chief of umpires should have overturned the call. What a travesty!

The ump acknowledged that he messed up big time and apparently genuinely regrets his mistake. Still, how could this happen??!!! The 27th out of a perfect game is the wrong time to be snoozing! That was a clear out, no doubt about it! | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
