Where do I need to go for some New Orleans funk?

George Porter Jr doesn't have anything on his schedule. Galactic is outta town. What to do, what to do.

Go to the Maple Leaf. Rebirth Brass Band plays there every Tuesday Night. Also, there's almost always good music at Tipitina's.

The whole internet thing doesn't seem to have caught on much down there. It's really a harsh environment for computers.

Simon Lott has a CD release party on Friday, and this isn't a bad lineup Saturday at the Howlin' Wolf...

Make sure you see Big Al Carson. That guy is phenomenal! If you want a great Bloodymary or the best drink prices around check out the Erin Rose on Conti st. It's a teeny little dive bar, but it's my favorite place of all!

I find it curious that a guy that doesn't list his location feels free to rip another. Whatever.

Back on topic:

You can always head down to Frenchmen Street. Clubs all in a row such as DBA, Spotted Cat, Apple Barrell, Blue Nile. You can just walk down the street and find something that you like. Good mix of local music not really geared to tourists.

I had a good time tonight at http://www.wednesdaysonthepoint.com/ and hope I'll be back in town for next week's. It'd be helpful to know when you're coming and what part of town you're looking at, or if that makes a difference.

Sorry let me go fix that just for you.

For the record Im from Louisiana.

I prefer the Daytime N.O. scene rather than the night, if that makes ANY difference.

Thanks for all of the input. I'll be in town over Labor Day weekend, Sept 3-6. A Frenchmen Street stroll sounds like a viable option since we're staying in that area.

I'd love to go to new Orleans. Was lucky enough to see many of the big names in London O2 Arena for free (2 day festival). A couple of years ago. Which happened alongside a match between the Saints and another team at Wembly.

Dr John, Allen Tousaint, Rebirth brass band, New birth brass band, Beusoleil, Buckwheat zydeco, John Mooney...

Went in a mere Meters fan (they weren't there). Came out a lover of brass bands, NOLA Rock n' roll / RnB and more

Also digging Galactic atm

Spent the last 4 days in NOLA and had a blast! Went all over the place. The French Quarter had some great brass bands on the street, a great funk/r & b band called Deja Vu (Alembic bass and GK rig) at 541Funk and another great funk/r & b band near the french market. I didn't catch their name but their bass player was the best one I saw. He was playing a Marlieux (sp?) 5 string bass and an Eden rig.

Spent most of my time on Frenchmen Street. The Blue Nile rocks! An outstanding blues/funk band on Sat and Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey on Sun. I also spent time at a Reggae club, the name escapes me. The band was Higher Heights and the bass player was Wanda. She was totally cool and down with a great reggae feel. She played a Tobias Toby 5 string and an Ampeg rig. Another player came and sat in for a bit and he was so tight with the drummer that I thought that he was a member of the band until I found out later that it was Wanda.

I ate too much and didn't drink enough. It was a great time and I'm planning in going back this winter some time.

What about the Dirty Dozen Brass Band? Are they in town? If so, go check them out.
