I have Sennheiser HD201s, and they just don't cut it. They're alright, but weak on the bass and don't block out sound enough. I'm looking to spend around 60-70, I might go a little higher if there's something truly worth it. They can be full size, I'll probably be using them in my dorm exclusively. Noise cancelling would be neat, but as long as they're fairly decent at blocking sound then I'll be good.

Help?

I used these for a while until I broke them (Hurr durr jump in a pool hurr durr): http://www.google.com/products/catal...d=0CDIQ8wIwAg#

They come with a few different earbud sizes, and they do a pretty good job of killing outside ambient noise. The bass response from these, once properly fitted, was phenomenal.

In your budget i would try to find some Grado SR80s at that price used. If you do research they are considered the best headphone at the price level.

I've had a gaming headset that is dual purpose, great bass/treble balance.

Its a triton.

If you want some ridiculous, yet still intelligible low end (obviously enhanced) try Dr. Dre's headphones. they're called Beats. And they are not cheap, but I walked away VERY impressed at a Best Buy last weekend. Plugged them into my own iPod to get a real idea, and they ROCKED.

edit: these are the exact models I tried. SOOOOOO bumpin in the low end.

I have three headphones. The ones I use the most are some old Sony MDR V600's. They're comfortable, give a decent full response but do not block outside sound very well.

....which is why I bought a pair of Sennheiser HD 280 Pro's a while back for their closed back design which reduced the bleedover I was getting when doing home recording. They're not as comfy, but they do keep the hot side hot and the cold side cold with a good frequency range.

As for really reducing the bleed, my third set of headphones are some Shure SCL-3's which I got on deep discount at one of the major online music stores. They're awesome for blocking out sound, and keeping sound in. I don't love their sound quality, but for closing out the rest of the world, in ears are great.

Sony MDR-V600 or MDR-V6. Slight bass emphasis, but a nice balanced headphone, closed-ear so you're acoustically isolated, and they fit around the ear, not on it, so they're comfy. Under $90. The MDR-V600's have slightly larger ear cups and are slightly larger overall, so I like them for home use. For field video and audio production I use the Sony MDR V6 or 7506 models.

My MDR-V600's bleed like mad, but as I said, they're old and the ear covering has lost a good deal of its elasticity and form compared to new.

For keeping room noise out and music noise in I really like the Senn HD 280. They are very flat and even sonically for the price but they may be a little bit our of your price range at $100.

Tell your roommate and neighbors to shut up. You have a right to peace and quiet in your room, and shouldn't have to resort to blasting music in headphones to get away from the noise. However, if you're the type that likes blasting your own music, I'm glad you've chosen headphones and not speakers.

I hated the people that blasted music in the dorms. It always seemed to be the worst music possible at the highest volumes.

Yeah, that can happen - but you can get replacements from Sony. Pretty easy to install new stuff.

Unfortunately that seldom works and they usually don't care (kinda like asking guitar players to turn down when one is not in a position to fire them).

And yes, there is an inverse proportion between taste and decibels.

'Not cheap, but...

"For drummers and FOH sound engineers...

...Ambient noise isolation > 35dB (A)..."

--------

BTW. I had a pair of audio-technica ATH-ANC7 active noise cancelling headphones (battery-powered, they had a tiny microphone in the exterior of each ear muff which picked up ambient noise that a circuit inverted 1800 and then fed into the speaker in order to cancel said ambient noise).

They worked well for attenuating the steady drone & whoosh of computer fans but did NOTHING to block out the transient noise of my idiot neighbours' yelling over their booming stereos.

But worst of all these rather pricey 'phones were the most unmusical-sounding headsets that I have ever heard. (I went back to my cheap earbuds until I eventually bought a $50 pair of plain old passive audio-technica ATH-M20's in the expectation that I'd blow 'em apart playing bass guitar through them anyway.)

I'll never buy 'active noise-cancelling' headphones again.

My drummer has a set of these, and they're pretty awesome.
