For a healthier life.

I'm a big guy and always have been but lately I've been taking steps to not only change that, but my overall health as well. I know there are at least two different weight loss threads but my question is a little different.

In the last few days I've started trying to eat more healthy foods and less junk and have pretty much cut out everything besides milk and water and far as drinks go. More fruits, more veggies, more meals, smaller portions and all that . I'm wondering if I'm over looking anything or if I should look at different vitamin supplements (currently taking a generic Rite-Aid teen multi-vitamin )? Hopefully, I'll be able to make this change permanent and I plan to start exercising regularly next week (after midterms). Any advice would be appreciated!

I would definitely add exercise to your plan. Try to get your heart rate up at least 3 times a week for 30 minutes and I think you'd have it.

I would get familiar with a couple good nutrition books. The ones that keep you reading to the end and the ones you refer back to. An understanding of what does what to your body will help you make good decisions. I'm going to start exercising regularly as well once school ends April 8th, love to see who's also jumping in after school.

I wish I could offer you a good book rec, but the one I have is extremely girly. Too girly. But a great book.

Not to gross you out, but some time ago I was having a conversion with a guy on a plane and the topic tuned to vitamins. He said not to take the hard ones [as opposed to gel or powder caps]. When i asked him why, he said he owned a porta-potty company, and sometimes he has to deal with the waste himself. He said those cheap hard supplements come out the pretty much same way they go in. It's like swallowing a pebble. Was he full of crap? I don't know, but I've been taking premium powder capsules vitamins ever since.

exercise during midterms-it will help you study.

Take a look at your grains as they can often thwart good health intentions. Cereals can be full of sugar, a lot of breads have sugar, etc. Look to simplify any grains you eat by buying the ingredients in as raw a form as you are prepared to use. oatmeal, rice, millet, quinoa, and simple breads(flour/water/yeast/salt) go a long way to improving health when replacing wonder-bread and lucky charms

PILLZ HERE: One-A-Day or Centrum, omega 3, and anything else your doc says.

Cut carbs, bad fats (fast food, cheeses, excessive dairy, premade dinners, etc), red meat, salty foods, fatty meat, etc.

More veggies (avoid canned as much as possible), whole grains, chicken, fish, and such.

Don't eat out so much and stop eating fast food. It's more expensive, has more calories, carbs, fat, etc, and will stick to you without filling you up.

If possible, go to farmer's markets. The food is better quality and typically cheaper than the grocery store (at least that's what the ones I've been to were like).

Exercise at least half an hour 6 days a week. I lift MWF and run TRSat.

Don't get discouraged if you don't see any noticeable changes in a few weeks or a month. Different people metabolize and break down fat at different rates so stick with it!

I take a multi, Omega 3 and Vitamin C for supplements. IMO, it is worth it to spend money on good vitamins. If there is a GNC in your area, or the US for that matter, their house brand stuff is very good, as is Amway's house brand. Good vitamins are easier to absorb by your body and they don't have any fillers in them, which can be bad for you. I don't know if the supplement industry is regulated in the US, so you might want to do some reading up on what the good brands are your area.

If you start working out regularly, look into a good Whey Protein, make sure it is at least 95% isolate. Check out Scoobys Home Bodybuilding Workouts for a massive amount of FREE workout and nutrition information.

Welcome to CrossFit: Forging Elite Fitness
This is what my wife does and I do. I took a long break after back injury but now I'm back.
I lost 20 pounds my first month and 15 the following all while getting stronger. 1 hour 3 times a week is all it takes. It is super high intensity but extremely varied so you don't get bored. Great supportive community feel too. It's not a meat head kind of sport people of all ages and shapes and sizes do it.

This past summer I dropped from 207 to 179 by exercising and cutting liquid calories (but not milk, I still drink it and eat cheese) and by eating what I want to eat when I want to eat - but recognizing the difference between being hungry and being bored.

Cut the junk (soda, fast food and fried snacks) and eat what your ancestors would have eaten, which includes pies and cakes btw... be reasonable, but be consistent.

Eat the ladies you date. Since there aren't very many at the moment, you'll be bound to drop those pounds in no time.

Just joking buddy. Seriously, take care of yourself and develop healthy habits now. Don't just exercise because it's a chore though. Find something fun to do with your body (biking, kayaking, swimming, basejumping, kiteboarding, whitewater rafting, sword fighting, warthog wrestling. It's all good.

+1

Finding something you enjoy and look forward to doing will make exercising a million times better and easier*. That said, make sure whatever it is that you get into gets your heart rate up.

I'd just say cut the supplements. Get the vitamins you need from your diet. Your body is well adapted to take care of itself is there is a slight deficiency here or there. People don't need to overload themselves on vitamins and supplements, we did survive a long time before supplements came around the way I seez it.

But that's just me and I'm not a doctor

.....also fiber is important ...

oh yeah, I forgot to mention that crossfit gyms usually have lots of really lovely ladies in who love to wear tight fitting athletic wear. A year ago I had ever seen so many nice posteriors in my life. My wife commented on it too. Now she has one. Win for me.

I've given you my supplement advice, and now I give you my workout advice:

YouTube - charliejames1975's Channel

Do not be distracted by her hotness; just observe what she does [hundreds of vids] and know that you don't need a gym to be fit.
