If she wanted to make it up to her husband, she just needed to love him and be a good spouse. She did not need incriminating letters.
I read the original article in the Telegraph (UK.) There were having problems before the letter, and he had earlier moved out. I think there is a good chance that she pulled a lot of stuff on the man, and maybe even the children (at least some of them) are not biologically his. He probably feels like a sucker who has lived a lie for the past seventy plus years.
That would make me bitter too.
