Help The Dude Get A Bed

So I moved out of my folks house a few months ago, got an apartment and all that jazz, and I'm sick of sleeping on the twin mattress I've had since I was like 8, (which is also on the floor in a ghetto starving artist motif I have going on right now). I inherited a dresser and all that stuff but I still need a bed.

Mattress shopping is the most confusing thing ever. I don't want to get had into buying something I don't need and I also don't want a piece of crap bed. I was hoping some of you guys could help me out here.

I need a queen sized bed (so I can have a woman sleep over and not wake me up every 15 minutes) and a bed frame

My budget is 1,000 dollars.

Go to the Salvation Army. They have mattresses cheap. I remember my old GF and I picked up a king for 200 bucks when we moved in together.

Try before you buy, best way to try and get one that is comfortable for you.

To me the inflatable mattress from a outdoor store, the one that has the self inflating fan installed in the side, is much more comfortable. and they are like 40$... When I was a single man, I used it in a water bed frame...VERY comfortable. I also installed a heating blanket in the bottom of the frame so those cold nights were comfortable, and I was cooler during hot weather too...

and they don't collect dead skin...

the reason I used an air mattress was I punctured the water mattress after I glued a twister mat to the top of it,

Craigslist.

We don't have a mattress in that price range, so I have no idea what would be considered good for $1,000.

Something to consider...Most people spend more time in bed than any other single location in their day-to-day life. To me, a good mattress is highly important.

If you're just looking for something on the cheap, check Salvation Army (good call, Maki) and craigslist. If you're willing to invest in something decent, do some shopping. Lay down on as many mattresses as you can in your price range. Spend as long as you need to figure out if it's for you or not. Be sure to lay in the position you actually sleep. The salesguys WILL wait for you. If they get uncomfortably pushy, walk out and go somewhere else. You have the money that they want - you're in control. Haggle a bit - you'd be surprised what kinds of special discounts or free add-ins pop up when it looks like they'll lose the sale.

A couple of factors (besides price) that I look for:
- Firmness (this is a totally individual preference). I prefer a medium-firm mattress with a "pillow-top".
- Movement transfer from one side to another. Many modern mattresses are built so that movement by one person is felt very little by the other. This way, when the chick you dragged home from the bar that night wakes up and wants to get out of your house as quickly as possible, her getting out of bed won't disturb your good night's sleep.

You have the exact same bed as mine, except mine has an asian chick sleeping in it all the time. I've usually tired her out enough so she's still there in the morning though.

My bed is definitely missing the asian chick factor. I should look into rectifying this immediately. I suspect that my wife might object, but you never know...

I appreciate the heads-up as well, I honestly just want a bed.

So it looks like I might have to go over 1,000 I guess...Its rather confusing...my roomate comes home with a whole ikea bedroom set for 2,000 I figure I should be able to get a pretty sweet bed for 1,000.

I don't really want to salv army a bed, because a) the selection will suck if there even are any (I go haloween shopping at the salv and I've never seen any desirable beds) and b) I don't want to deal with moving it, I want it shipped to my apt.

BEWARE!! There was a really sickening television report on the lack of sanitation (read - bed bugs, urine, blood, feces...) in "reconditioned" or used mattresses.

-800-MATTRES is your friend, I've used them 5 or 6 times since the 80s. Great Prices, great service and good recommendations.

I bought a bed on a finnish net auction (similar to ebay) for €12. Three years old, 120 cm wide, thick "additional mattress" (what are those called in English?) and it's good enough for an occasional guest..

I guess it originally wasn't that expensive, maybe €200-300, but it was definitely a great deal.

Can't compare it to a top brand bed, but I sleep well enough on this one.

Where have you looked so far? We got this place up here called Sleep Country. They have an outlet store with some sweet deals.

Macy's Veteran's day mattress sale - google it - I just checked it out. They have Queen sizes for under $500.00 sale price.

I'll say it again, if you're in Newark, check out Ikea. It's right near the airport off of the Turnpike.
I bought a bunk bed there for my kids complete w/ mattresses for under $300.
You will probably find something there.
I wouldn't touch a used mattress with a 10' pole.

I haven't looked anywhere, still in my preliminary research phase.

I need to know more about something than the salesman before buying it.

and I watched a Penn and Teller on insomnia and it taught me that mattress salesman are the used car salesmen of the bedroom.

Yeah I just went through their site...I'm gonna need to go there cause I dunno if I want soft or firm or whatever....*sigh* this is harder than buying a computer.

I love Ikea cause everything matches and you can get Swedish meatballs, but I've been warned about crappy beds from there...I've also seen one two many press board cabinets that don't stand the test of time....I'm trying to impress the ladies without spending 5k on tempurpedic space foam (although I have one of their pillows and damn is it nice)
