| | Registered User | | Join Date: Jun 2008 Location: North Augusta, SC | | well, my male cat is spraying now, and I wanna ring its neck, but to put to sleep for a disciplinary problem is a sickness of its own...that was cruel what your parent's did. Unless it was sick-peeing cause of a kidney failure or severe bladder issue that is life threatening to cat...that is sad.
I would get a cat that doesn't have long hair, that is fixed so in case (your late kitty) was marking territory, the fixed one won't. Get one that is already de clawed so it won't tear up your furniture..or get a good scratching post for it...
Now kitty's will have an accident from time to time...esp if their box isn't clean. They are particular animals!! They are cleaner than a dog. Dogs stink even after a bath. Cats never seem to stink!
Good luck. If it doesn't work, then maybe you have to wait until you move until getting one...

YOu can judge their character a lot better in an older animal, and in most cases the cat will have already been nuetered, been given most of its shots, etc. And as above, make sure the litter box is cleaned at least once (preferably twice) a day; you would object to using a toilet that hadn't been flushed and smelled bad, wouldn't you? (Ugh. Reminds me of the outhouses we had to use at some of the Scout camps I went to back when I was in school...) An idea, anyway.

What your parents did was totally wrong IMO. You'll most likely have new issues between your cat & your parents if you get one now. Wait for college.

Getting another cat now would be hard on you and your family, you because pet ownership is expensive and them because cats shed and/or spray and/or shred furniture.
Wait until you have a place to yourself to get a pet for yourself. |

Urinary incontinence is often associated with hormonal imbalance in spayed females or a disorder of the nervous system that controls bladder function. Aside from these conditions, inappropriate urination may also be the result of a urinary tract disorder, prostate problem or other body malfunction. Consult your veterinarian if your cat suddenly becomes incontinent or begins to urinate more frequently." See more at: http://weymouthcats.com/senior_cats.php
You're vet may have been incorrect in the diagnosis. |

Seriously, if it is your Dad's place...it's totally up to him.
But you may try telling him that you miss the other cat and getting a new one would go a long ways to filling the void.
Give him a little while maybe.
Hope that helps. |

You're vet may have been incorrect in the diagnosis. | Yes, I agree. I was also wondering if he may have developed diabetes. My cat of 14 years got that in his last 2 years and started peeing on everything. He would eat and eat but never gained any weight. He just wasted away to nothing and then disappeared one day. I'm guessing the coyotes got him. He had problems with them in the past but always fought them off. He was a BIG STRONG cat. He also used to kill raccoons.

He obviously views them as an object to be disposed of. Wait for a time when you have control over the critter's fate.
