Help recovering old Data. Knoppix newb.

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey guys,

Some of you guys may remember me asking for help getting stuff off my desktop and laptop since both have hit the fan. Anyway finally installed knoppix on my flash drive to burn on dvds all my old stuff and am running knoppix off the usb, but i cannot find all my files from my hardrive. Where would it be in knoppix? Afraid to say that i have been looking for them all morning to no avail. Appreciate any help guys. All advice one this issue is helpful and more than welcome, as well as any linux info as well.

Thanks

Hello thejrace,

On most linux distributions I have used, additional hard-drives are mounted at the following locations:
/mnt
or
/media

That is assuming that Knoppix found and mounted your hard drive. Check those locations for directories labelled either hda# or sda# and look within to see whether they contain the contents of your drive.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the help, but nothing. I checked all the sda, hda and nothing. Find a bunch of windows exe files with that blue washer looking icon, but no music, pics or anything else.... T_T How would i make sure it found my hd and mount it?

EDIT I also performed a search and came up with next to nothing on jpgs, so im assuming it didnt mount my hd.

I'm also kind of interested in this. I'm now running multiple partitions and would like them to be able to communicate. Sorry I don't really have any help besides a request for what comes up when you go to your file browser?

Try running the mount ntfs command on the drive where you believe the files should be.

I was a Linux noob three weeks ago and used it to rescue data from my pal's PC (there's a thread about it here somewhere if you search). In the process I figured out how to mount a drive after booting from the Knoppix CDR to get at the files using the above command. I can't remember all the details, but this is the answer you're after, I'm sure. If I figured it out, I'm sure you can - but if you get really stuck, let me know and I'll reboot this PC I'm on using the CD and refresh my memory of exactly how it's done. But you can work this out yourself now, really.

MOUNT NTFS - it comes up in the list of commands as soon as you start to type the word "mount".

Come on, let's have a bit more self-reliance! Too many easy answers on the internet have made us all lazy.

Tried running the command, but nothing came up. I should mention I am using 5.1.1. For the newer versions I need a live cd to install knoppix on my usb and I do not have access to a pc with a working burner. I also took a closer look at the hda and sdas, seems to have mounted the same drive, which is my D drive, dell stuff, because all have the same dell startup files, windows stuff, and are all the same size. Appreciate the help guys. Believe it or not, I have been checking online to figure this out on my own, but coming up with nothing. Perhaps I am google dumb??
