Help! video capture software?

I simply cannot get the roxio capture software that came wimy computer to work properly.

Does anyone know of any free (or very low cost) software that will

1. import video from m DV cam onto my computer
2. maintain the scenes
3. save in mpeg (so I don't have 30GB files!)

I have 20 tapes to do, so I need something that will just run through te entire tape at one & make one file with the scenes seperated.

i also need to know, my cam isn't complatable with vista...so im kind of shafted.

how come it's not compatible with vista? That ms really odd, since the cam is not software.... if it's a regular dv cam, it should work?
