Hey guys, bass noob here

Hey guys, my name's Dmitri, just joined the forum for the first time.
So yeah I've been playing bass for a while with the same old gear:
A fender affinity p-squier bass
A fender rumble 15 bass amp
A Vox VT20 hybrid amp

The reason I have two different amps- the rumble handles bass a lot better because it's built for bass, but the VT has a lot more distortion effects.

I'm also in a band- Thallium Byway.
Well actually now it's just me but HOPEFULLY more people join.

So yeah, hopefully I'll be able to get more equipment and start recording, because I've been writing music for a while and want to make some demos so that people can see how awesome I am... jk but yeah. The only problem is money- holy **** gear costs a lot of money!

Yeah hopefully veteran players can give me some pointers and yeah.

Also, I worship John Entwistle. Like, he's God to me. My favorite bands are the Who, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Sublime, Pearl Jam, and yeah... there's like a million bands that I like 1 or 2 songs from ahahaha. I really like Nirvana but I try to stay away from them because
A. If you really look at it, their music kind of sucked. Like it was ridiculously simple and had no particular meaning. The only talented member was Krist Noveselic, Kurt Cobain was GOD AWFUL
B. Their fanbase is so annoying. Like they act like Nirvana actually did something groundbreaking. No, they sucked. They were just really loud and angry. They ripped off of the 70s and 90s bands. And no, their lyrics were awful. they meant nothing

Just as a forewarning. If you're going to bash on a band, especially one with dedicated fans such as Nirvana, be prepared to defend your point. Talkbass is a hot bed of debates and strong opinions. Since you're new I thought that I should give you a heads up before people started trying to rip you apart for stating your opinion.

However, I don't really like Nirvana and I don't even think Krist was anything special. That's just me.

Welcome to the site!

I'm confused. Do you like Nirvana or not? If you do, listen to them. Who cares if they have annoying fans? Forgot what other people think/say about them. I listen to James Blunt every now and then, even though 95% of the population think he's god awful. If you don't like them, that's fair enough, but like autodidact said, bashing bands/musicians on talkbass doesn't get you the answers you want, just a big (and often hilarious) debate.

K, I'll start the debate...

1. How old are you?
2. Nirvana may not have had the greatest musicians in the world, but they wrote really good, catchy songs. Each of their albums had a similar sounds but also had vastly different sounds too. Just listen to the weirder stuff on Incesticide. Besides, they produced Dave Grohl. Once Nirvana was done he started Foo Fighters. He wrote all of the songs on the debut and played all of the instruments on the album. I'd say he's an excellent musician.

They did do something groundbreaking. Although they didn't invent it, but they took grunge and brought it into the mainstream. AIC, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Mudhoney, Sonic Youth, and a myriad of other Seattle area bands can thank them for basically making them more popular. People wanted to know what kind of music this grunge stuff was, and they immediately started buying anything that came out of Seattle. Ten, Badmotorfinger, Dirt...

It'll be 19 years this April that Kurt died, and we're still talking about it now. I'll also assume (possibly wrongly, and I'm sorry) that you weren't even born when it happened. I think that says something.

hey...give the kid a break...he's young (right?) and new here.

yeah, i like Nirvana too....BUT on a thread that said Cobain was one of the greatest guitar players of all time, i voiced loud objections....to each his own

welcome and, yeah, try to tone down the bashing of any particular group, since A) that is frowned upon by management (although, as far as I know, not TECHNICALLY a violation) & B) whatever group you bash probably has fans on this site and you don't want to hurt anyone's feelings. I made that mistake a while back and one of the mods got sore at me.

just go with the flow, ask questions and offer opinions as you fell warranted...but, as said, if you do offer opinions, be prepared to justify them...this is one of the highest IQ websites i have ever visited and you are sure to be taken to task for anything you say...

again...WELCOME

You know what else is so annoying? People who deify one bass player and his band, and then rip another one because they don't like their music. Plenty of people think John Entwhistle was a terrible bass player, and that The Who was a terrible band.

Welcome to Off-Topic and the Internet, where everything you type will be held against you.

Hi, Dimitri - welcome to TalkBass. I'm going to shut this down before you get stomped into a sticky visceral goo. Check your PM box, OK?
