As a fellow high school wrestler, I can completely understand what he is saying. Frequently the sport puts you into a position to have to put your hands on or near areas of the body that society tells you it is a "no-no" to touch. There is also the factor that you have to physically challenge and potentially injure her, which may also be against someone's morals.

I don't really know what the big deal is though. I forfeited a match against the number 3 guy in the state in the same manner. It allowed me to take the loss I was going to get anyways, without giving up one of my six matches I am allowed to wrestle in a single day. It also allowed me to place 4rth in the tournament by those same rules.

I say it was probably a good play on his part.

if it's gonna be co-ed matches, gender should be negated and grab and slam and pin any way you need, as is custom by standard rules.

It's a cheap, hollow victory for her, and I am sure she and everyone else realizes it.

That this is even being treated otherwise is baffling to me.

I'm all for non-discrimination of the wimmenz, but wrestling..? I dunno...nothing inherently wrong with it, but it just seems like it's way too easy for it to become a problem. Just one wrong move either real or misconstrued and, BAM, big problem for her adversary in a match. Cant she wrestle another female? Maybe the school could have a female wrestling program? Just thinking out loud here.

agreed. That little clip they show of the other girl that did wrestle and lose, those are moves meant for the bedroom or living room when playing naked twister.

If I am going to be grabbing people near their privates, in a perfectly legal activity, I would rather is be somebody of the opposite sex. To each his/her own, I guess.

I have coached a female on a wrestling team before. She was quite good. She even made it to state her senior year. I think the fact that this girl made it to state as well says something about her ability. The guy probably saw this as an out for losing to her and saving face.

Check out that picture of her arm being raised, too. Girl has some lats on her!

Some serious lats!!! If he would have wrestled and lost to her would the rest of the squad give him a hard time about it?

See, here's what I'm thinkin' - this gal and a guy wrestler are wrestling a match...writhing around trying to pin each other to the mat. He's grabbing her every which way, she's doing the same...how long is it going to take before this gal's dad starts screaming "He's touching her inappropriately!!!".. I don't know, maybe I'm just over-thinking this, but with the hair-trigger sexual harassment culture we have I would be really hesitant to let my son go up against a gal if he were wrestling. I'd be telling him "be careful where you grab her" etc. Which would probably propagate enough second-guessing for him to lose the match automatically...
meh, just call me paranoid

Why is it so hard for some to take the story at face value and respect the kid's moral convictions? I commend him for remaining true to his beliefs.

I would have forfeited also. Not for religious reasons, just because it wouldn't seem right.

He should have smashed her, or let her smash him.

It's the only equal way!

Maybe he just didn't want mid-match-wood?

When I wrestled in High School, waaaay back when, we all lined up butt nekkid for weigh-in. Do they still do that? My interest is purely academic, of course.

Some sports really need to stay single-sexed. That in no way means girls can't compete with guys (or even vice-versa), but I feel like most guys have issues with playing against girls in any *real* competitive manner.

after looking the girls photo I, too, think he was afraid losing for a girl.

and... if a father lets his girl wrest with other boys, he cannot complain anything about "touching"... even if the boy do it intentionally.

Ring is a battle field.
