Hobby for my Wife

Sign in to disble this ad
I have several hobbies.
Boating, fishing, playing in a band every weekend.
I was thinking the other day, that my wife doesn't really have any hobbies to speak of except for her love for Movies. We have hundreds of DVD's and we go to the Movies at least a couple times a month.
So this morning, we're having coffee and she says "you have all these hobbies and I really don't have any. I suppose cleaning house could be my hobby."
So, fellow bass players. Help me out here. What do your wifes do for hobbies? I'm looking for ideas for my wife. Keep in mind she is partially disabled (major back surgeries with screws and rods in her back) so nothing athletic will do.

You'll know better than us what she is interested in.

What about anything arty? Photography?

I was going to suggest something else, but I'd rather not get banned

She picked a hobby when she picked you.
Now your hobbies take you away from her quite a bit it sounds like... every weekend.
Just something to think about ...

Digital photography would be good. Editing and modifying pics is time consuming

Damn, way to lay down the guilt for playing. She picked her hubby when she picked him, not her hobby. A person should have outlets that are independent of anyone else.

Does she like to write? If she does, then have her attempt to write a movie - or in ancient language - a book.

Photography is a good idea as well.

It is never too late for your wife to learn how to play an instrument.

Baking home made goods is quite the art, and if you live in an area with tons of yuppies with puppies, maybe she can start a little business selling home made dog treats.

There are tons of ideas that can be figured out just by search through schools and see what they have to offer. Perhaps she can pick up a trade/go back to school to become a master of something.

Get her a keyboard, and show her that she can play along to a lot of the theme songs to her favorite movies.

You play with her

Introduce her to Atoz bass face pic, Phalex, 5String, Mac, and then introduce her to photoshop. Hours of fun.

Making dollhouses. Then when you're GASsing for a new bass, she's drooling for a new house kit, or a bit of miniature furniture, and you've got a little leverage.

Welcome to Greenleaf Dollhouses - Home of Affordable Dollhouse Kits

They do take up space after a while though. Encourage her to sell them once they're built.

Yeah, I had to buy a live chinchilla for her one year after I bought myself a SWR head and cabs. LOL

That's something very personal. If she's of the disciplined kind, she can probably undertake anything and see if she likes it on the long run. But in the end, it really is a matter of finding something fun to her.

I suggest she tries different hobbies while you're away at band practice. Shouldn't it feel like "me" time for her too?

How about volunteering? If she likes animals, I'm sure there's a shelter nearby that needs volunteers. If she likes kids, there are after-school tutoring opportunities. She can be a museum docent, or deliver meals to old people, etc. Just go on craigslist and look under volunteers, there are tons of things she can try that will get her out of the house, meeting like-minded people, and doing good for the community.

Buy another chinchilla, have her raise and breed them. She can than earn a fur coat by saving the skins of the dead chinchillas. You work hard at playing bass for years thus allowed to make bigger purchases. She can do the same

If you say your wife is into films, why not try filmmaking or video editing? You don't have to be hugely adventurous or have a ton of high-end gear to do this, and editing a film is also an art in itself. She could concentrate on making videos on any interests or particular areas of filmmaking, such as working in black-and-white, time-lapse video, fast-speed camera work, low-light work etc. And if you say your wife has disabilities, the good thing is that there's some very light gear available and you can likely do most filming sat down.

Then there's the fun of video editing: edit suites, fade-outs and screen wiping, slide timing and arrangement, captioning and subtitling...there's a whole host of things you can do to finished video.

It'll also provide an opportunity to get others involved, such as friends and family, perhaps even a group or film class and the end result is something you could still watch in years to come.

Perhaps even a music video for the band!
