Holiday Sadness?

Sign in to disble this ad
Since i'm the only one that doesn't get bummed out during the holidays (I can't stand Xmas tunes)... how many of you do as well?

Now the main question, why do you feel down during the holidays????? I have yet to figure mine out.

i feel down sometimes. mostly because it's brutal cold and i don't have any family or friends. but mostly it's 'cause i usually have to work on xmas day. not even overtime pay eases the woe!

i realized that every xmas seems to slip by even more unnoticed with each passing year, so thass good.

XMAS WAS A BIG DEAL FOR MY MOM. SHE LOVED DECORATING AND COOKING AND ALL OF THAT. SHE DIED ALMOST 6 YEARS AGO. THATS WHY I GET VERY DEPRESSED DURING THE HOLIDAYS.

NJL, you didn't really say what it is that gets you down this time of year. I know you recently went through a divorce...is that the cause?

FWIW, I'm one of those annoying people who loves this time of year.

i'm not a big holiday kinda guy. it always brings out the worst in me, i don't know why. i think it's because everyone goes overboard and crazy and since i don't go along with it they get pissed and call me names and say i'm a drag. this in turn effects my self-esteem and i get pissed.

This will be the first Christmas since my dad died (about 3 months ago). Don't quite know how it's going to go just yet.

Only thing that bums me out is the post-holiday letdown that some folks seem to be afflicted with. These folks are usually ones who have never REALLY seen or been to other places on the planet where people do have something to be depressed about.

Mostly I'm the same but enjoying the cooler weather(easier to put a coat on than pack an air conditioner on your back).

That's the best advice I've heard all year related to anything. I think I'm gonna start using it as an answer.

I must admit I detest the holidays. My Birthday is 11/20 followed by Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years usually alone. I'm single and the only family I have left are two aunts in there 90's who live over 1500 miles away.

I can get a bit down sometimes. Not sure if I'll see my family over Xmas, but even if I do it'll probably only be for a day, with 800kms round trip.

I just hate the fake 'cheer' of the holidays, the crowded stores and made rushing around to spend money. It all seems plastic and devoid of anything worthwhile.

Bah, humbug.

You all are weird. I love this time of year. Always puts me and everyone in a good mood. Probably because it gets colder down here, so people are too worried about getting warm than being mad at each other.

Although I do know that my computer applications teacher from last year gets depressed during the holidays, so he takes a cruise. He's not on good terms with his siblings because neither of them would help him take care of their mother. That's pretty terrible.

Good point! Last year (we separated in Nov, divorced this May) was horrid.. but even before that, even before I even knew her, I get down during the holidays...

Maybe it's the time change??? Getting dark earlier??? I really don't know... at age 30, I still can't pinpoint it and it really pisses me off!

Actually it's faily common!

I remember visiting a friend's mother at Xmas and when we got to her flat, she wasn't there and we found that she had checked into a local mental hospital.

We went to visit and it was really crowded with people who seemed perfectly normal - and over a few visits got chatting to people. Virtually all of them had voluntarily admitted themselves as they couldn't stand being home at Xmas!

That was a fair time ago but since them I have read how this happens a lot - people check in at Xmas to avoid feeling bad at home and share their woes with others who feel the same way - it almost becomes a regular yearly visit!
