I was running errands earlier and noticed Home Depot and Lowes right across the street from each other which I find kind of amuzing but just wondering which one do you prefer?

Home Depot. To me, Lowes seems more like it was designed for women.

I prefer my local hardware store, but If I have to go, I usually choose Home Depot.

Lowes has better lumber though, or so I hear.

Local hardware first, Home Depot second, Wal-Mart never. As far as Lowes goes, I can never get any help at Lowes; always at Home Depot and they seem to know what they are talking about

Lowes seems to be less crowded when I go in but both have real helpful people working there. I notice more contractors at Home Depot. If I am in a hurry I go to Lowe's because my Home Depot gets too crowded especially mornings and weekends when the builders take over

Reminds me of yesterday when I saw a Pepsi truck and a Coca-Cola truck parked eerily close to each other. I was waiting for an epic battle to ensue.

Alas it did not.

Rona, Home Hardware, Local places, then the others if it is an emergency. IMO there is almost never a reason the shop at Home Depot or Lowes, they both suck and you can find anything at those places somewhere else, usually cheaper, with better service and free delivery. At far as contractors go, I don't know a single one that would go to either place for ANYTHING, no service and the lumber prices are stupid high. Maybe it is different in the States, but here in Canada, I want to fire bomb any Home Depot that I see.

Home depot, but only because I know where four of them are within a 15-20 mile radius of my apartment with the closest about 5 minutes away. The closest lowes I know of is at least a 45 minute drive. There's also a local hardware store right around the corner from my place, but it's only open 8-5 mon-fri and until noon on saturday. I realize they're probably catering to contractors or people like that, but it seems pretty stupid to me to keep bankers hours for a store of that variety.

Lowes for me... Unless they don't have what I need, then I cross the street and go to Home Depot. Only 'cause our Lowes is bigger than our Home Depot. I figure if you're going "big box" may as well go for the bigger of the boxes.

For years our neighborhood had a "Do It Center". Then Sears Hardware went into the strip-mall diagonally across the corner.... Couple years later, Home Depot went in across the street, bigger and "better". About 1 yr after that Lowes went in next to the HD, bigger yet.... You could stand on the corner and see 4 hardware stores...

Guess which one is now gone? Do-It-Center is empty. I figure Sears Hardware can't last.

On the other hand, I can drive 9 miles down the main drag here and pass 4 Walgreens Drug Stores.

Either situation seems a bit excessive to me.

Lowe's for me, but only because the local Home Depot mainly employs clueless teenagers. I would rather support a smaller mom&pop place, but there isn't one around here.

Home Depot. Same stuff, better prices usually, easier to find what I'm looking for (in my opinion).

i guess it depends on what i'm looking for...not many independant shops near me...lately i've been going to lowes cause its newer than my home depot. More of the workers are still happy to be there...home depot seems depressing at times. Price also varies depending on what i'm buying.

Home depot employed knowledgable people when they first started. Now they are clueless. I once got a group of 6 home depot employees to scatter just by walking towards them. useless.

To answer the OP's question, I prefer Home Depot, whereas my wife likes Lowe's.

Typically I'll use the local store since they are 3 minutes from my house and handy when I "fix" something incorrectly.

i prefer the subtle "blue" to the in your face orange. I just feel more relaxed in lowes. But i don't buy anything...i just go for the feeling.

Basic stuff - Home Depot. Different ideas, designs, or styles on stuff - Lowes.
