Home Theatre Wiring

As per my previous thread: What TV brand?

I ended up buying a 32" Samsung 1080P LCD open box for $569. And now that Sony dropped the price on the PS3, I'm planning on picking one up as well to cover my Blue-Ray, DVD, CD, gaming, etc. My dilemma is connecting it all to the older receiver I have.

My dad recently updated his home theater and gave me his old JVC RX-882VBK receiver and Bose speakers. I know Bose gets some bashing, but for free it will do. My problem is that being an older unit, the receiver does not have any HDMI inputs or outputs.

Can I make this work?

Hdmi from the PS3 to the TV, and Optical from the PS3 to the Receiver. Don't get scammed buying expensive digital cables, they're a rip off.

If I may ask my own question here, does anyone know if I can use the optical out on my TV to my receiver to pass the higher audio signals when I go Blu Ray? I was thinking HDMI to tv, optical to receiver if possible. Thoughts?

What's nice is that with the latest PS3 software upgrade you can route your audio to multiple outputs. So you can send HDMI to a TV and Optical to a receiver simultaneously. If you felt so inclined.

Nope, Optical won't carry HD audio.

Not much point doing that, as again, you can wire it like that for but you'll only get stereo audio through the TV and regular 5.1 through your receiver and you would have been able to do that for ages. The best way to do it would be HDMI to a HD audio receiver, then HDMI from that to the TV.

Any more questions? Seriously, I sell this stuff all day every day.

The reason I brought it up was that, prior to the software upgrade, you had to choose in the settings which audio output you were using. The signal was not simultaneously sent to all outputs; only one was available at a time.

Seriously, I sold it all 10 years ago Thanks for the input (pun intended). I prefer to have the ability to watch a movie on the TV (kids) and be able to add the surround sound when we want. With Blu Ray, can you send more than one out at a time? Component video with stereo audio to the TV, with HDMI for HD pic and audio to the receiver? One HDMI to the set, a second to the receiver?

Receiver has no optical inputs or outputs. Is it possible to run HDMI for picture and the AV Multi Out for sound?

Yes; this is how I have mine set up. You just have to change the settings in the Audio Output menu.

That's the kiddy.

As for the earlier thing about audio out, you're right superduck, I just can't see a use for having simultaneous optical and hdmi multichannel audio.

Stu, Most HD receivers will allow you to go HDMI in, HDMI out, precluding the need for seperate cabling to the receiver and the tv from the blu ray. Some, but not all, will also pass through stereo audio to your tv when switched off. My money's on Denon atm. So you only need to have the one hdmi out from your blu ray.

If your receiver won't take hd audio, you can just run the optical/multichannel audio out to it, and the hdmi to the either the tv, or the receiver if it's one of the weird ones that has hdmi video switching but not hdmi audio decoding.

Right. I guess that's what I want, HDMI pass through. I want to play DVD/Blu Rays without the receiver. Stereo TV for the kids, and surround for the family. Any Denons that come to mind? I may just find an HDMI switcher to route the signal for me.

Or just HDMI to the TV, and optical or something to the receiver. you'll not get HD audio, but srsly, i don't rate it that highly anyway, unless you've got awesome speakers...

Will that still pass the digital 5.1? That's all I care about anyway.

Yeah, that's it. Not sure about Denon US models, but I rate the AVR1610, at about £350.
