Honey's gone. Damn.

So Friday afternoon one of my dogs ran away. That happens. In fact it had happened with her fairly recently. We got her back that time and I expected to do the same this time.

We made 'Lost Dog' wanted posters and hung them all over the neighborhood. We went door to door asking if anyone had seen her. We checked all the local pounds and shelters.

All along I figured she had hopped into someone's car and was at their house being pampered until we found her...like last time.

Then yesterday, someone saw one of our posters and called us. He said "I have news about your dog. But you're not going to like it."

She had been hit by a car and killed probably only minutes after digging under our gate. They couldn't tell who she belonged to, because she had gotten her collar off again. So they just called the city to collect her body from the side of the road.

We don't even get the closure of digging her a grave in the yard and planting a tree over her like when our dalmation died.

Honey was a Chihuahua/Terrier mix who lived slightly more than two years. She was kind of a sandy/honey color, hence the name. When she was interested in something and perked her ears up, she looked like Yoda. She would get in bed next to my wife's leg and scrunch down to where only her eyes and the top of her head showed. When she did that I called her Honeygator.

She hated closed doors and would push them open just to see what was on the other side, even if it was a room she'd been in a zillion times. I couldn't tell you how many times someone in my family had tried to pee and had Honey open the door and come in. She would come into the bathroom and lick my ankle and look up at me like she was saying "Hey I'm down here. Pet me."

But now she won't do any of that any more. She's gone and all we can do is mope about how we miss her. It sucks.

We still have Jazzy, but she seems confused, as if she can't figure out where her buddy is.

Crap.

RIP Honey.

That sucks. I know your pain - Same exact thing happened to me with our first cat. Was gone for a couple of days, we put up posters, then got a call from someone who lived a short way away, saying he found a cat dead in his garden that matched the description - His collar had come off too so he just called and had someone come to take away the body.

It sucks that you won't get to give Honey a proper send off, but at least you know now that she is at rest.

Sorry again mate - The passing of a pet is just like losing a friend/family member, and although it's hard, just keep your chin up

This is what has happened with our cat. He was ill; he disappeared a few days ago and we haven't seen him since. Cats apparently prefer to die with dignity, away from their owners.

I especially feel worse for my daughter. I joked that Honey and Jazzy are my 'Grand-dogs' because they were Miranda's 'kids'.

She was pretty hugely broken up just thinking Honey had run away. But knowing she was killed? I suspect I see a really dark few weeks coming.

Do you have any other dogs?

It may be a good time to pick up a stray or another puppy. We got a puppy less than a week after ours was put down. Our other dog was lost without him. But the puppy has really brightened everything up

We still have Jazzy, our Beagle/Sheltie mix. But I don't want to get a new dog right away, before everyone has a chance to get over it.

I was thinking that I would get the next dog after our vacation trips were over. We'll do my annual folk festival pilgrimage in a couple of weeks. Then my daughter is supposed to go on a one week trip with her grandmother.

So when she gets back from that trip and we'll all consistently be around for the new dog to get used to all of us...THEN we need a new friend for Jazzy.

Bard2dbone, my condolences on your loss. It is hard to lose a dog who is a member of your family, and it's especially difficult when the dog is so young.

Have you had your dogs microchipped? If not, you should consider it for Jazzy. All three of our dogs have chips. One of our Huskies got loose a couple of weeks ago--the first time in over five years that she has been with us--and we were able to get her back within a matter of hours because the animal control officer who picked her up was able to read the microchip.

Dude, man, I'm sorry to hear that.

I can relate, my last cat snuck out through an unlatched screen window (he was an indoor only cat) one night and never came home. He was 16 and in poor health, so I'm sure he was going away to die, but not knowing still eats at me. That cat had been with me through a lot, and I was VERY attached to him...

Definitely get a new friend for Jazzy when the time is right, the best memorial for a passed pet is to give that love and care to a new one.
