The House of Wax remake had a redeeming feature; Paris Hilton got a pipe through her head.

I really liked Rob Zombie's Halloween though.

Several of my favorites are being remade (My Bloody Valentine and Friday the 13th among them)- I'm just waiting for a Happy Birthday To Me remake.....

I'm sure the pristine film stock and the overdone background music will leave the new FT13th nowhere near as scary as the old one. I'll probably still go see it as it comes out on my birthday.

Relating to your story, when I was seven I went to see The Karate Kid 2 with my dad and my sister and mother went to the other screen that was showing James Cameron's Aliens, and they said I could see it if I wanted but I opted for Karate Kid. I still regret that decision

I enjoyed dawn of the dead but not as much as the original.

I dont think the "bad remakes" are limited to horror flicks...

I have most of the old Universal B&W monster movies - Dracula, Frankenstein, The Mummy, The Werewolf, Creature from the Black Lagoon, etc.

My kids watched many of them when they were less than 10 years old, and they did get spooked - by The Mummy, especially.

But those movies are incredibly slow-paced compared to today's movies. I have taught video production, and I like to use old movies to demonstrate composition, sequencing and other concepts - but I notice that even films I really liked 20 years ago (like The Long Riders) seem rather slow and deliberate compared to today's films.

In some respect, this is good - because many of the older films have ACTUAL character development, which a lot of today's films conspicuously lack. However, in other respects it makes it difficult for viewers raised on today's fast-cut, non-stop films to watch them.

the other aspect that I notice is the difference between suspense (think Martin Balsam walking up the stairs in Psycho, until the killer jumps out of the doorway) and horror (full-body spearing...).

Today's horror films (many of which I haven't bothered to watch) seem to put a premium on the horror/pain/mayhem aspect, whereas older films put more emphasis on the suspense aspect. In 1940 they couldn't use digital EFX to cut someone's head off with a chainsaw on-screen (not that I consider that necessary or desirable), so they did a lot of buildup and kept the actual beheading just off-screen.

Of course, today's films do build suspense, but there's a different style to it. Hitchcock would not have found their work very challenging. But after all, he was more of a suspense-oriented director and author than a horror-oriented one.

Believe it or not, "Oldboy" is in talks to be remade with Spielberg at the helm and Wil Smith in the title role.

I puked a little at first, but then I'm thinking "How the hell can they possibly butcher this amazing movie for a PG-13 audience?"

I just don't know sometimes.....

I think they should remake all the horror movies and have it always turn out that fuzzy bunnies and rainbow ponies are taking the people to Snacky Cake And Bon Bon Land for a visit, only to return them shortly.

Imagine the new shower scene from Psycho- she opens the shower curtain and there's a bunch of snuggly fuzzy bunnies and some rainbow ponies who swoop her onto their magical flying carriage and she gets dressed up like a princess and gets to eat all kinds of tasty treats and then is returned to her hotel room with her pretty princess dress and a mouse that turns into her chauffeur, Nigel.

Are you related to me? I went to an older cousin's house one Halloween night when I was a little kid, and some people were watching Friday the 13th near the beginning. When I looked at the TV just when it was showing people freaking out because they were about to get killed, he turned me away and said that it was just a giant bunny and that they were just scared of it.

The Blob and The Thing remakes were pretty good. They are not really all that new though.

And all action movies should have guns replaced with walkie talkies.

"The hills have eyes" was a great remake I thought. I live on horror movies, and have a constantly growing collection. I love the gore (not al), and add basslines to them.

Anyone see the Wicker Man remake? I love the original, and I refused to go and see the remake, because I thought that it would probably be awful.

The over done post production does it for me. Too much cheeseball soundeffects and cheeseball heavy metal.

Bring back the orchestra and violin runs!

ANd yeah the old movies do seem to crawl compared to todays quick fix jobbers...but tension was the key thing. Hitchcock knew that well.
As for character development, you get attached to them and when they go one by one..it gets you..you get really sucked into the movie..because you identified with one or more of them.

Still chilling to this day...Donald pleasance's part in Halloween..."I met this 6 year old boy..." That whole speech...You knew you were screwed.

With Nick Cage? I thought it was superior compared to the original that (I thought) was just plain stupid

Both the Hills Have Eyes and Halloween remakes were pretty good time wasters. Other than those though I can't really think of any.

In some ways I thought Rob Zombie's Halloween was better than John Carpenters. I liked the original My Bloody Valentine and Friday the 13th as well, so I'm going to go see these or maybe wait for the dvd to see them just to see how they hold up to the original. From the trailer I'm thinking My Bloody Valentine is going to be better than the original, but I could be wrong.
