Hot Sauce

Sign in to disble this ad
I went to Philly on 4th of July to see fireworks and The Roots (as well Earth Wind & Fire, Boyz II Men, Michael McDonald, etc) perform. I went to Geno's after the celebration to get some cheesesteak and I remember that they had the best hot sauce there. I came back to NJ a few days later and looked hard for a good week, trying to find the best hot sauce, but found no success; most of the ones I found are more salty than spicy, which seems to be the trend for most hot sauce now days. Can anyone recommend some good hot sauce? Preferably ones I can buy online so I don't have to go look for them.

Picture of Geno's at night, taken by me

The "salty" can also be from vinegar. All the hot sauces I use do not have vinegar in them. Go to the ethnic isle in a Safeway and there are loads of brands to choose from.

"Pico Pica" hot sauce is what I generally use. It is an excellent Mexican hot sauce.

I'm no expert, but Frank's has a good flavor. Not too much vinegar, hot without being rude, readily available and inexpensive.

Not sure if this is readily available but a buddy of mine had me try this hot sauce he says he got down in Mexico called (and I'm not joking) Heroin. Mistranslation perhaps? I don't know, never saw the stuff elsewhere.

According to what the guy who sold it told my friend, they start with a bunch of raw jalapenos and keep mincing them and letting the juices out so as to give it a slightly more liquid feel. Then take seeds out of chili peppers (just seeds) and mix it in. Then they mix these two things together in a "secret blend", which is the base for the sauce. They then skin ghost peppers and soak the skins in the sauce and bake them. The "meaty" part of the ghost peppers is squished (think squishing a bunch of tomatos) and then mixed in with the sauce. The skins are then broken into chunks and put in the sauce. It is then boiled to bring it all together.

Hot. As. Hell.

For just heat? Who cares??? Once it gets past a certain point, it's just HEAT and there is no flavor.

For actual flavor? Tabasco, Chipotle Tabasco, and Cholula. Texas Pete is not too bad either, but made in Winston-Salem, NC, oddly enough....

Tabasco, sriracha, Frank's, plus a "novelty, face metler style" hot sauce are all found at my parent's house when I'm home and/or my apartment.

Used to have that. It's one of the better ones I've had, but still a little too salty.

I'm actually using Frank's Red Hot right now, and it's not more salty than I prefer, but it's the best hot sauce I could find at the supermarket (out of the 3 kinds they have).

I've had those hot sauces, and Chipotle Tabasco is actually pretty good.

I like Frank's too. We get it in bulk from bjs wholesale club and I fund it is a good everyday sauce.

I make about 20 gallons of hot sauce a year, I prefer mine

A lot of good ones mentioned above

This is a tasty one:

DAVE'S GOURMET 2011 JOLOKIA PRIVATE RESERVE

For the really brave, try getting some cap crystals. Blair's 16 million reserve. Put one crystal about the size of a grain of salt in a pot of soup, then throw it away, because it's too **** hot.

Did you check out the link to Dr. Gonzo that hover suggested? I did, and it is very good. I even called up and talked hot peppers with a guy for almost an hour. I like how everything is natural, and it feels good to support someone so passionate about hot sauce like I am.

Have you considered purchasing or growing peppers and making your own hot sauce, it is a wonderful experience .

I experiment every year and have compiled some of my favorite recipes, anymore I rarely purchase much except for extremely hot hot sauces as collectible almost (I use some, the Dave's I mentioned above has fabulous flavor, but is not for the feint of heart).
