My brother and I were trying to catch him in lip-sync mode because just about everyone else did.

I wouldn't expect Tom Petty to do that.

Aside from the last five minutes of the 4th Qtr, Petty's show was the only portion of SB that I paid attention to. It didn't look like he was phoning it in.

I wouldn't think he would. Besides, his mic was too big to be certain.

Anyone else notice that the Ampeg SVT-CLs the bass player was using were on, but on Standby? I guess he went direct, which doesn't surprise me, but if you're only going to use the amps for show, why turn them on at all?

Maybe Ampeg wanted them on but the floor director didn't know better.

To make it look like he was using them...

I thought that it blew, but I am not a fan of Tom. Wasn't very interesting. Prince was 100 times better.

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers were great, just came out and played the songs, good old no nonsense rock and roll.

+1

prince brought the hits, but also i really dig that he did a modern cover (foo fighters song) to "connect" to the younger crowd

I liked the Prince show too, but he's pop. I like Prince tho.

Tom brought a band. I think it's the best American band going for the last buncha years. He's the real deal for R&R

Did anyone else notice that 3 out of the 4 toons were from his solo album - the one without the HeartBreakers?

ps> the bass player is Ron Blair. If I had been offered a buncha SVTs I woulda left 'em on standby too

Two good Super Bowl halftimes shows in a row IMO. That's surprising since I've come to expect 20 minutes of pure suck.

While not one of my favorites, I've always liked Tom Petty (especially the Wildflowers album) but I gained a whole new respect after seeing him live. A number of years ago I saw him at the Fillmore and it was just an incredible show. The perfect venue for him and it was an almost perfect concert. The rest of that night (with my friends and my girlfriend at the time) just made the whole thing that much better.

Am I the only one who thinks his age maybe catching up with him, more so than other "classic rockers". I came away with the impression that, in footbal terms, he had lost a step. They did sound great though, then again, it's not like they're trying to play YYZ or anything. Did you hear the bass player bite it on the 1st time through the opening bass riff in American Girl ?

he wrote a song about that kind of behaviour, so i doubt he'll do it himself.
