How can I get a passport?

Sign in to disble this ad
My wife and I will be celebrating our 30th wedding anniversary on July 21 and we'd like to go to Vancouver, Canada where we spent our honeymoon.

Neither one of us has a passport. She was born in Tacoma, Washington while I was born in Kyushu, Japan to a US serviceman and a Japanese mother. I've never had a passport and both of my parents passed away 10 years ago. My wife has the necessary materials to apply for one but I don't have a birth certificate. I've lived in the United States since 1951.

The new requiremens for a passport includes more than a birth certificate such as information about my parents before I was born. I have no idea how to answer them. My only sibling, a sister, passed away 10 years ago.

What can I do? Will I ever be able to travel outside of this country?

To get an US passport, you need to be an US Citizen. Read further...

Get your photos done at a CVS, etc. The Post Office will rape you for those.

Do you need a passport to go to Canada? I don't remember having one a couple times I went there. I could be mistaken, though.

You do need a passport to go to Canada, now.
You can get one of two types.
1. The regular Passport allows you to travel any mode to where ever.
2. the Passport Card (looks like an ID card) will allow you to travel by auto or boat to Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Bermuda.

I have type 2.
Unfortunately, you have waited waaay tooo long to apply for it before your scheduled trip.

Yes, CVS, Rite-Aid pharmacies will have the best deal on passport photos. Make sure you do not have a blue-tooth earpiece or any other object obstructing ANY part of your face/head. The Passport Dept will reject the photo. I know.. I forgot to take out my BT earpiece the first time and Rite_aid didn't notice it..

I think that you can have any of the following: nexus card, passeport card, passeport, EDL but there might be restriction (some only works for road and not air or something).

Do an internet search on reviews on rushmypassport.com before buying.

It sounds like they can do the job, but they're expensive and you need to have all your info gathered before starting the application AND you better cross every T, doe every I, and do everything perfectly. Be careful.

But if you can't answer every question, I don't think you're going to be able to work through the process in time. I suggest you go to Seattle and enjoy the waterfront instead. You do need to work through the passport stuff, but it's liable to take months.

Slightly derailed - How in the world have you gotten by 60 years in this country without a birth certificate or proof of citizenship??

Do you have your dad's birth certificate? Him being a US citizen is what makes you a US citizen (since your mom was Japanese and you were not born in US soil). You may have to do some serious digging here for old records that may take more than a month. The expedited passport takes about 10 days or so. I got the "regular" speed passport and had mine in about 2 weeks.

You'd be surprised.

My grandmother was 20 years old before a birth certificate for her even existed. The doctor NEVER filed one.

At 20 years of age she had to go to the county clerks office with her mother, and a non-related witness to her birth - and they made up a birth certificate on that testimony and filed it.

What I want to know is, how can people go 50 or more years without getting a passport? There is a big ol' world out there, you know, some of it's rather nice, and it's there to be seen...

Don't know where you live, but if you're in or near a large city, there may be an immigration office near you. If so, you can get your passport expedited directly at the federal office without paying the middleman fees. Last year my wife's passport was not in its file the day before we were leaving on an international trip. We quickly found out you can get a replacement directly from the gov in 24 hrs (for a large fee, of course). But we're lucky to have a local office here in San Francisco.

There may also be a process difference between getting a replacement passport and a new one. I wouldn't delay getting it going.

Birth certificates can be replaced. Normally you need to contact the town clerk's office from where you were born. If you were born in Japan with a military father, the military may have an office that can help track down the birth certificate - were you born on base or in a Japanese civilian hospital? It would be a good idea to get a copy of that in any case. But you may have to postpone your trip if you need to get the birth certificate replaced and then go through the whole passport application process.

In my country I don't think you can get married without a birth certificate, let alone get a passport.

I guess the original Japanese birth record would be the key, along with your Dad's BC. They are rather paperwork retentive over there in my experience so it shouldn't be too hard to get sorted.

It might possibly be quicker to get a Japanese passport but I suspect they would make it hard for you being a non Japanese. Something to look into if you really want to get to Canada in three weeks.
