By any chance does anyone here have experience shipping a dog ? I am going to be making a move and I would like to have my 4 legged companions with me.

Box them up and put them on a UPS truck.

Um, why would you not take them alongside you? That's what you should do anyway.

Sounds like a cross country trip is in order. Or fly with them. I wouldn't ship a dog without some sort of companionship, it can be very stressful for them.

When my cousin moved from Pittsburgh to Colorado a few years ago her and her husband drove with their dog the whole way, they had a SUV with all the seats down so it had space to move around and had a bed, food, water, toys, etc. for it and stopped often. Now they're moving back in two months so they're doing it again but you said companions so if that means more than one I'm not sure how that would work out.

Is it a domestic move, or does it involve crossing an ocean? If it's entirely land-based, I'd drive with my pooch right in the truck with me.

If you're crossing the ocean, however, it's airplane or ship, I'd think. If the dog is small, you can take it in the cabin of the plane with you in a pet carrier (the carrier has to fit under the seat). Big dogs have to fly in the cargo hold though - that's pretty stressful for them, I've heard. In other countries, there's also the quarantine process that can keep your pet isolated for up to six months (depending on the country) to consider.

I believe it's illegal to ship live animals.

internationally? if so contact a customs agent in the country you are destined to. i think pets fly as luggage but i am pretty sure there are quarantine issues transporting live animals. I've heard horror stories of pets dieing due to owners not making proper arrangements. if cross country contact the airline if flying and a vet.

One of my dogs was shipped to me via Delta Freight from Mississippi to Philly when he was 9 weeks old.

No issues, but I don't think I would do it again... I think it messed him up in a head a little.

Hi.

+10000 to the company part, a pack animal like a canine may fall seriously ill, even die if stressed by solitude in a strange place, constant un-natural (to them) motion, strange sounds etc.

That for me rules out any cargo holds, especially on a plane.

Imagine Yourself in a one square meter (or less) cage, locked in for the duration of the check-in, the flight with all its peculiarities, unloading etc. I'd bet the majority of the people wouldn't last 'till the take-off. With the lights off, less.

Our lab (9 mo ATM) has travelled in a car/van/truck with us for his entire life so he's pretty cool with it, but some dogs can't stand cars or even vans. They feel too restricted and take that on everything. With their teeth and nails obviously.

So my advice is to choose a method that's most comfortable and natural for the said dogs.

Regards
Sam

MM, I've shipped 3 dogs internationally, and I'm about to do it again. PM me if you've got specific questions. Many countries have an "in home quarantine" program, but you need to start the process pretty far in advance (6 months, in the case of Japan which is a rabies-free nation).
