How do you ground a radio?

Sign in to disble this ad
My dad was told by his treadmill repair guy that the interference he hears on his radio while the tread mill is on could be repaired by grounding his radio. Its just a little stereo radio with a cd player. How can I do that for him?

thanks

steve

?? The electrical outlet has a ground built in, it's the 3rd prong hole. Use a grounded power cord from the radio to the outlet, nuff said

Well the radio has a two wire cord coming out of it. A grounded power cord has 3 wires. Now what?

To be honest this is no different than picking up noise on your bass. Put copper foil around the inside of the casing (don't cover any vents though!) Switch the cable that's in there for three core connect the live and neutral to where they should be and connect the ground to the foil.

Or if it already has a metal casing just connect the ground to that.

That's just it, you'll need to replace the power cord with a grounded one. It's pretty simple, you just need a soldering iron and the cord. If you are leery about doing it yourself, you can have a shop do it, should run about$10-12 plus the cord

I can definitly do it. I just don't understand where to attatch the third wire to inside the radio. The chassis is made of plastic. The first 2 wires will just replace the original 2.

If you end up doing what I said it might be a good idea to insulate the foil so if for some reason it does come away from the casing it won't short anything.

I can't imagine doing it would take that long.

What kind of interference does he get, and is it on AM or FM?

I'm thinking AM. When ever he uses his treadmill, the motor running gives him static.
