It can not be forced upon anyone though, as stated, it's a choice. In my darkest times what helps me: Perspective. I live in a house with running water, that alone makes my life so much better than the lives of so many people. For most, hard times come and go.
I don't know, the only real typical guy answer is Beer, which, no offense to anyone: That's really ****ing sad. The reason I hate going to bars around here, you can see so many ruined/wasted lives just sitting on those bar stools. Alcohol should be a fun/celebratory sort of thing, I am VERY pro booze, but using it as an escape from lifes problems usually just creates alcoholics and more problems.

Seriously though, I know what it's like to have nothing that makes you happy.... when it should.
Alcohol is a temporary band-aid, doesn't help much and usually the next morning is worse because now you have a hangover. The most important thing to identify what the cause for unhappiness is. Someone who is depressed will generally spill their guts easily. If there is no apparant cause (loss of close friends, S/Os, family members for whatever reason), all the more reason to be visiting the doctor.

From a personal experience , You have to find out something that used to make that person happy, if there was such a time in their lives. Duplicate that, or if it was too far in the past, something that reminds them of that happy feeling of the past.
Happines is not a trivial thing and no one should take it for granted.
IMHO, happines is one of those things best shared with someone.
Being able to help someone that needs my help makes me somewhat happy, so You might consider that too. It's not nescessarily what You can do directly, but what You can help them to do.
Regards.
