Question How do you react when in close proximity to a fight?

Sign in to disble this ad
I was at a fairly big party tonight(~80 people) and everything was going good. People were happy, there was music, a wet t-shirt contest, fun conversation, etc. But then a large fight broke out. Now, I'm usually the type to try to break-up fights, but tonight proved that when a fight happens in a large group of strangers, I walk away, get in the truck and leave. I'm not sure how many people were actually throwing punches, but there was about twenty people all moving together pushing and pulling at each other, and I had no desire to join them.

Anyway, I've been reflecting back on the night wondering if I should have handled the situation differently, and I became curious of what others would do when placed in such a situation. So... How do/would you react when in close proximity to a fight? Do you join in throwing punches? Do you step in the middle and try to separate them? Do you walk away?

You did exactly what I would do. I have no interest in risking my well-being over some drunken knuckleheads' inability to hold their liquor. Check yourself for bruises and other injuries. See any? No.

Yeah, no injuries for me tonight. If I had gotten involved, I don't think I would have came out of it looking too pretty. I'm fairly sure one guy lost an eye, and I don't think he was even fighting! If I ever throw a large party, everyone will have to drink from cans or plastic cups. No bottles/glass allowed!

I would just get my girlfriend and friends and leave. I have no desire to to put myself in avoidable danger from others.

I would've done the same thing. If it was just a couple of guys, then maybe I'd call you a pansy for walking out But when theres a crowd of people fighting its best to stay out of it.

My first instinct would be to get out of there, you can't tell how things will escalate. I'd get back to a safe distance and see if anything interesting was happening.

I join in with hopes of turning the small fight into total donnybrook. Think Gangs of New York, outside, in the snow

If it is scum, then I leave it.

If it is people I know, I'll break it up.

Depending on the situation, if it was people I kind of knew, or was in someone I knew's house, then I'd probably try to help break it up, depends on how many of them there are tho. I don't drink and am fairly big, so it is usually easy enough to trip a few of them to get them to the ground whilst avoiding incident.

If it was two guys you knew then you could have done something.

Twenty strangers going at it, and you'd just be made making it 21. I bet if you asked them all 20 would tell you they were trying to break it up!

If you wanna go to the next one, just PM me your phone number. I'll get you directions. You might want to bring ice skates and a stick, thought. Just in case a another hockey game breaks out.

That'sa toughie. If I don't have a dog in the fight, I go get one, because every good melee has at least one rabid animal. If no animal is available, I just yell "are you gonna let him do that to you?" after every punch is thrown.

I was thinking the exact same thing. Perfect opportunity, spare booze lying around because of the fight, and many chicks who just took part in the wet t shirt contest and looking for a way to leave the scene as soon as possible.

And just for the heck of it, I'll call the cops.
No pics, no wet t shirt contest!

Hell yeah! While all the other idiots are fighting, just steal their girlfriends!

Oh, and call the cops once you leave so that you can have the whole night in peace.
