How far is annoyingly OT?

Sign in to disble this ad
i'm not calling out any of the Mods or saying that they have done anything wrong. they are a great bunch of people and practically every interaction i've had with them has been wonderful. even, (perhaps especially) when i've unknowingly said something against the rules and been made aware of that. they do a lot of hard work and they keep this site the great place it is.

my question, is how much is too much off-topic chatter for all of y'all IN A THREAD NOT POSTED IN THE OT SECTION? i understand wanting to keep a thread going the direction it is intended, but if there is some playful back and forth for a few posts is that really such a big deal? sometimes the slight divergence leads to an off-hand comment that makes me learn about something that is in fact VERY on topic.

i also feel like i actually know a few people here that i've only ever communicated with through this site. and most of those relationships have come from banter that led to pm's that led to liking that person. and then realizing that these are people that i would consider friends and want to hang out with in the real world.

all of that is a big part of what i enjoy about coming here. not just the information, not just the wealth of knowledge and experience that people here share on a daily process, but also the feeling of a community. i would hate to see that aspect of TalkBass go away, and would think it would suffer and be a poorer place without it.

i hope this thread does not get closed, it's an honest question and i'm curious how most of the users feel about this.

thank you.

I am here primarily for the derails & tangents- pertinent info is for me a sometimes-welcome byproduct.

Threads in OT go OT frequently. I find it part of the charm of OT.

I greatly enjoy the fact that the mods do NOT hang around in threads and demand everyone stick to the topic of the original post. I would probably stop posting here if it got to be like that.

Sometimes I'll jump in a thread with the sole intention to derail it.

lol. i love "your point is invalid" de-mot posters. almost always awesome.

well, i posted this in OT because it seemed the appropriate place. i was talking about threads that are NOT in the OT section. recently a mod deleted some posts in the current Post Your Pedal Board thread. i'm not saying they were wrong to do it, but i prefer the leeway of going a bit afield of a subject as long as it ends up relevant, is funny as hell, or isn't too long a derail.

so, was pretty curious about how people actually felt about the subject. and i totally get the Dadaism of derailing a post about what's a good or bad derail.

..... i do want a watermelon-pushing kitten now tho.

Taking about the weather in Seattle and your aunt Tessie's cat Mr. Pookie in the amps threads is probably pushing it a bit, but commenting on pedals, boards, etc, in the PYPB thread (for example) is well within the guidelines IMO. If we had to start a new thread every time someone wanted to ask about a pictured pedal or amp setting, I suspect that the overall thread count would fractal out like mad.

A P/J bass.
For regular metal it's still a pure P bass.

Doesn't anyone read my column on basses for metal?

Clearly the cat has punched its paw into the watermelon in order to get out the mouse filling.

I only dislike tangents when they regress into circular, endless arguments over things that have absolutely nothing to do with the matter at hand.

like Kwesi, i like to be amused. and tangents and slight derails make everything so much more tasty and rubbable.

So you don't even know what you yourself are, yet you claim to know me. Typical

Have fun living in a bubble. Better yet, prepare for me to burst it. You ready? The world does not revolve around you. You need to grow up and learn some respect for your elders. And what's with all this pink lipstick pig bass stuff????? You really need to grow up.

All that would be funnier if it weren't actually the truth sometimes...then again, welcome to the 'net.
