How hard would it be to move to the UK?

Sign in to disble this ad
Inspired by the Sweedish thread and out of curiosity.

Coming from the US that is. Im a second generation American (grandparents came over to Canada during the war then moved down to NY) and am currently in the military. I think when I get out (years from now), however, I may want to move abroad for awhile. Ive always been interested in the UK, and have been over there many times to visit family etc. What would I have to do in order to make my way over there, just out of curiosity?

I think it would depend on your job skills. Since I had to go anyway for other reasons, I tried getting a job in Ireland in 2006 when I was there for a few months. There you needed to have job skills that were extremely valuable to get a job if you weren't an EU citizen. To be offered a job, a business has to prove to the government that no other EU citizen wants the job or is qualified for it. So, if you happen to find a job that no one in all of Europe is qualified to do or doesn't want, then you're in luck. I'm sure things vary from one country to another. I've not even been to the UK, but I doubt if the job situation is radically different from Ireland.

Very easy, we let any Tom, Dick and Harry in. Except Harry, we don't like him!

Not easy at all. I tried to do it a few years back, to no avail. Apparently they won't let you in unless you were born in the British Commonwealth, have $250,000 to invest in British business, are a brain surgeon, or a self supporting artist.

You could've been part of the commonwealth but no, you just had to go and gain independance.

Yeah, I've been regretting that for the last 232 years... Is it too late to apologize?

Don't waste the effort, people are leaving almost as fast as they are arriving. I left several years ago and have not one single regret.

Having a pre-arranged job isn't a prerequisite - you can apply to immigrate based on your skills and qualifications (if you have a degree, you'll have to have your GPA converted to the UK system, ie, 4.0 = first, 3.0 = 2.1, 2.5 = 2.2 etc) and you'll have to prove you have enough money to support yourself until you get a job (I think it works out about $8000). You'll also have no recourse to public funds, meaning you can't get unemployment benefit/income support or a council house, although you will be entitled to the NHS from day one. After two years, you can apply for indefinite leave to remain (ILR), and, after either three or five years (depending on what basis you immigrated on) you can qualify for citizenship.

There are shortcuts, such an an intra-company transfer, having healthcare skills (doctors and nurses are in strong demand in the UK as the NHS is understaffed), marrying a UK citizen or applying to study in the UK. Also, if you qualify for citizenship in any other EU country, that's transferrable to the UK.

I left 14 months ago, and miss it horribly. Can't wait to go back.
