Ok, are we really quibbling about how famous a bass player is or isn't to the general populace? Is that the real question? Because that would be sad...and point to empty celebrity nonsense shenanigans trumping actual notable contribution and acknowledgement of the craft... IF we're going along those lines, I guess the most famous bassplayers are

Sting (for his 7 hour tantric "skills")
Pete Wentz (for his sham...I mean ermigerd-so-awesum relationship with Ashlee Simpson).

There ya go.

Also, IMHO, Sting's music is much more than just 'shenanigans', and I'm not sure that said 'shenanigans' have a larger part in his being famous than his music.
