How many other TBers out there have a stutter?

This is something that's had me curious for a while now:

I myself have stuttered for as long as I can remember. My parents did send me to speech therapy for it when I was in the first grade, but the therapist dismissed me after only a preliminary evaluation because she was convinced I wasn't a severe enough case for treatment. Just to give you an idea how ridiculous this was, I was unable to complete a single sentence without stuttering through most of it. The one that sticks in my mind the most is one my father used to have me repeat (because he didn't know jack about stuttering and was trying really hard to help me stop. God bless him, most of the stuff he did hurt more than helped, but he didn't know that): "May I please have a cookie?" turned into "Muh-muh-muh-mmay I p-p-p-p-please hhhhave a cuh-cuh-cuh-cuhcookie?"

I didn't get into therapy again until I was a junior in high school, and by that time there wasn't much that could be done, so I'm still a stutterer and probably always will be. It's not as bad as it used to be, though lord knows I still have my moments...

How many others with speech impediments do we have here?

i dont necessarily stutter, but i perceive that people think i am unapproachable or stuck up because i dont talk alot at shows. i hate yelling over a band thats playing. if i want to talk while a band is playing, i'll go outside.

but the thing is, most ppl only want to talk about themselves, talk negatively about other people's fashion or interrupt me when i actually AM talking, which aggravates me to no end.

i like to talk about music, my bass, my dreams and my family. normal stuff, lol

not only that, but my dad always enforced the 'dont speak unless spoken to' theorum, and my mom always told me 'if you dont have anything nice to say, dont say anything at all.'

well, with that approach...there isnt much left to say! LOL

I have a stutter that comes and goes. Sometimes it gets really bad but usually it's only slight.

Interesting tidbit: after I've reached a certain state of intoxication, my stutter disappears almost completely.

Neither can I. Strangely enough, just about every girl I've met who sees this in effect thinks it's absolutely adorable. For some reason this pisses me off, though I usually just keep my opinion to myself on that particular matter and let them coo.

Sam thing here. And when I'm boozin' I talk more than a teenage girl; to anyone, about anything. No stutter at all. It's cool.

I had a terrible stutter that started in the second grade. I never went to therapy for it or anything, but it mysteriously vanished in the summer between second and third grade.

As an adult, if I'm really tired or something I will occasionally have a hard time initiating the first syllable of a sentence. It generally only lasts a second or so, and then I'm fine. Sometimes, though, I have to start a sentence wtih "Uhhh..." to get going.

T-t-t-t-today, junior

I don't stutter, but I have some weird dyslexic thing where I'll transpose words in sentences, as I'm talking, sometimes. It's pretty weird, it doesn't happen often, but when it does happen, all the words are there, but a few of them are swapped around.

Yup, kids are mean little pricks when it comes to singling out people for their faults.

I got 'em back though. I got pretty damn good at hurling "DOOTIE HEAD!" without stuttering.

I am not going to mention names but I have talked to a TB'er on the phone that did and met one in person.

Being the ADD person I am I like to finish peoples sentences. Not a good combination

I'll admit, this is one of my biggest pet peeves when dealing with the stutter around others. It doesn't really have to do with the character of the person finishing the statement. In fact I can appreciate it at times, especially when I know there's no way in hell I'm actually going to be able to say what I intended to say when I started talking. However, it's always an admission of defeat whenever this happens, that once again a couple little words got the best of you, and that can really hurt especially when some unwitting accomplice says them right out to you like it's nothing. I would imagine there's a bit of jealousy there too because of that... sometimes it really takes all my self control to keep from bursting out, "Dammit! I was trying to say that if you'd let me finish!"

Same here ... a slight stutter when under great stress.. or worse: unable to form coherant sentences.. again, while under great stress. Never have been much of a talker anyway.. ..

With that being said knowing how frustrating that can be, I did not interrupt.

A good friend of mine has it pretty bad. The more nervous she gets, the more she stutters, and the more she stutters, the more nervous she gets.

It's tricky at first not to start finishing statements or look in another direction, but you get used to it.
