Well in our case we were pushing 1500 horsepower through a two speed Powerglide, so I wasn't suprised the tranny had issues. |

But I bet *you* couldn't hold the transmission with one hand while you bolted it in place
Actually, I was really glad to have the 4 speed manual. The Hondamatic tended to blow up at 100,000km and where even more gutless on the highway. |

And it involved snow or mud each time.

I had a lot of problems with that car though. Once when it had about 210000 km on the meter, the oil clock (?) broke and it consumed 4 liters of oil on a distance of 160 km. I'm happy the engine didn't break too...
How far you can/want to drive with a car depends a lot between different brands and the size of the engine. Most cars will easily reach 200000 km, some will last well over 500000. You seldom get problems with the engine though, it's mostly other things that start to break.
My new car, a saab 9-3 2.0 from '98, has only 130000 km on the meter, so I expect to drive far with that one without more than regular maintenance and services. It should be a more reliable car than the previous one (a Mazda 626 2.0i from '94), or so I hope at least.

I lost the transmission in my plow truck today during the NE storm. The good news is I have a back up plow truck and I got the trans out of the other truck. My rebuilder will have it done by Tuesday. |

I had to get out and shift gear selections under the truck (it broke in reverse) in order to drive it to the shop. Fun fun fun.

Fun fun fun. | My Mazda 323 used to lose the bolt that connects the gear shift to the rest of the transmission. I used to carry spare bolts that where sloppy, but worked.
Once it failed while I was out and about, so I called CAA (Canadian version of AAA). They came, lifted the car, I put the bolt in place, they put the car back down, and I drove away
I finally fixed it myself. A little locktite made a *huge* difference. Before that I always got it fixed under warranty since the bolt and cheap plastic sleeve was $50 or $80 |

I knew something was coming but didn't know when. The engine was so full of sludge, it made it impossible to properly check the oil. I ended up running out of oil in the middle of a road. Car died & I had to buy a different second hand car.
I am not handy in the least. No way I could have leaned how to fix it.

I was able to syncro shift it and we drove from southern NY up into the Adirondaks and back with no clutch. Another time, another clutch mechanism failure left me stranded in the South Bronx in an old Dodge Tradesman work van. I was able to limp that one home the next day. Fun times; ah youth!

| | | | 1st Strike; 1969 Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu El Camino with my Dad in the late 70's or early '80s. It was a stick. We were sitting in traffic at a red light and I noticed stick shift just kinda slump down real subtle-like. Then Dad tried to go and got nothing when he let out the clutch. Linkage had snapped.
2nd Strike; 1996 Chrysler Town & Country Minivan
3rd Strike; 19?? Ford Escort
The other two were automatics that i bought. They were all used vehicles, so I guess it was to be expected.
The worst was having a timing belt go on my Subaru Loyale when i was bringing the wife back from the airport with her bags and my sons in the back seat. I was on the Palisades Parkway and i just happened to be near the 1st gas station north of the George Washington Bridge. Luckily that car had a stick and was on demand 4WD instead of that full time AWD, so i put in the clutch and I coasted into their lot strictly on momentum during rush hour. The line for gas wasn't blocking the entrance quite yet so i squeezed by the line and got into the parking area with a few inches to spare.

$3000 down the drain, the sunken look on his face after I told him it was a bad idea, priceless.
