how much is a fair price to rent my backline out?

Sign in to disble this ad
a friend of mine just messaged me saying his amp finally bit the dust, and he has a show this weekend with his band. he asked if he could borrow or rent mine. I run my rig in stereo. the amps are a Carvin X100B and an SWR Workingman's 4004, and the cab is a Low Down Sound custom 4x10+6.5"/1x18 fridge cab. the Carvin was bought for about $340, SWR for $270, and the LDS cab was about $900. I've never done this before, so I have no idea what prices should be. $50 a night reasonable?

50? He is a friend? Doesn't sound like you are doing right by him.

Give him the amp for the night and ask him to buy you a beer.

No charge between friends is how I would operate there.

To me, the correct price is "You owe me one". Usually that's a helping hand, and a beer for interest.

Assuming this is a good friend, I agree with L-A and the above cats.

I will add, though, that the people I call 'friends' are vastly outnumbered by the people who call me 'friend'; for somebody in the former group, no charge; but if you're in the latter group, then no dice.

What they said!

If you need to rent out, 100% deposit to cover damages, and 10% rental fee. Stops them from asking again in addition to covering potential losses. Then give them the number of a store that rents equipment.

well, he is a friend. I'll just nag him about a jack and coke that night. ha. he initially said "rent", and I currently need money, but I didn't really feel right renting it to him. I'll just say if any of the speakers blow, he has to replace them.

+1

For a real friend - don't worry about it and just let them know that they owe you one and some beer the next time you all go out. For guys you don't know, I'd charge the price of my rig to replace it. Why? Because it'll stop people who I don't know from ever asking.

Dude: Hey, how much would it be for me to rent your rig tonight for a gig?
jmattbassplaya: *Quotes price to purchase his rig*
Dude: Huh? I can buy it for that much!
jmattbassplaya: Exactly, now go buy one leech.

Makes sense to me.

I'd at least settle for "you break it, you fix it."

fwiw, I agree with everyone who said "no fee for friends" but when I was renting out my bass amp to clients, it was always $25/night per piece: So head = $25, speaker cabinet = $25, head + cabinet = $50, head + 2 cabinets = $75. And throw in speaker cables for free regardless.

I would tell him to lend you the price of the rig while he borrows it. So if he breaks anything, there's no room for arguing.

There's always the tried and tested "No" as well...
