For all of the working people....

If someone made you an offer, how much money ABOVE what you currently make would you need to change jobs? (Same profession, just different company)

I work for myself. I wouldn't do it. No way I'm letting someone else be my boss again.

not much. My boss is an racist idiot. It's not towards me (he actually likes my work) but way he treats black people makes me sick. He is very open about his sexist and racist comments and i can't believe he still works - anywhere.

I just don't understand how someone thought that its a good idea to hire a manager of red lobster to be a ****en manager of tech support. He doesn't know how to use a computer and yet he is a manager in high tech company in department that primarily runs on linux. He has no idea on how the product works and it hurts my brain when he starts talking about our product. When i started working there, i kid you not he asked me quantity/quality curve and i told him what i learned in school. He got mad and said they don't know what they are talking about in school and it's wrong, in real life quantity IS quality!

So yes, i have a job now, and i love people i work with and i love what i do. However, if someone came to me paying same amount but with a manager was not a racist bigot and knows at least something about product I would be gone in a heart beat.

I am praying he gets fired - really. - if that happens I'll probably stick around as this is just a job to get me through school.

The last time I considered taking another job it involved a move and I wouldn't have done it for less than double my salary. Without the move, you're still looking at 1.5 times my current rate.

10-15k more a year would do it for me, but I am already pretty much capped out in my industry.

Same profession, different company...probably not.

I know what makes my employer tick.

More hours a week, I'd consider it. I'm down to working 10 hours a week at my day job. If it wasn't for gigs, I'd be SOL. So-same wage with 20-35 hours a week and I'm gone. If the wage is higher-even better.

That being said, I've been looking for a new job for at least a month now. I've had a few interviews...and I'm looking harder and trying to work smarter.

To do what I do now? And get paid more for it? Sure. If being a student paid.

I wouldn't mind a tuition cut to change institutions.

I'd take a new job for the same pay that I'm getting now. I'm not fond of the place I work now and the people I deal with on a daily basis, whether their clients or management.

Heh...I'm about to do the opposite. I'm getting out of the Army soon, and I figure if I find a good job, I can make $7-$10 an hour with my experience, which is still a drastic cut from what I'm making now. It's about $450/week, and that's just my salary. Not to mention all the benefits...

So, I guess If I could make $500-$600 a week as a civilian doing this same thing I do now, I would. I'd also have the added bonus of not having to wake up at 0600 and having my freedoms back. That is good pay in itself.

It depends on the current exchange rate between currency and the oh so wonderful favors of sexy Asian chicks. I'm sure craigslist has got some kind of logirithm involving service, hourly wages and roses.

To derail the thread...

Maki, do you have a certain favoritism to a specific type of Asian girl, or is it all of them? I mean, myself, I can't get into Korean girls...never had an experience with Japanese or Chinese...I'm all about the southern ones, like Vietnamese and Philippina.

I'll do it for the insurance benefits. Same pay, better insurance.

At a rough guess:

- if I currently enjoy where I am working: 25-50% more;

- if I am ambivalent about where I am working: 15-20% more;

- if I don't enjoy where I am working: 0% increase would do.

However, that assumes all the other benefits etc where the same.

About the same for me. I enjoy my job, what I get to do and the people I work with. My pay is in the middle of the range for what the industry pays for my position. The company is not to bad, bennies are fare. It would take lots to get me to leave this job.

I'm in a very different position. I am nearing the end of my working life (I intend to retire in 2 years time when I'm 55) to spend more time writing music, racing my Ducati motorcycles and spending more karate training time to finally get my next Dan grade.

I've worked for the same major international company ever since I left university. 28 years now during which time my career has taken many twists and turns, spending so long in one company has never been dull ,since there are so many different roles and opportunities internally that I have never done the same thing for longer than 4 years.

By accident rather than design I have found myself in a customer facing role that is considered critical to my company, I've also got great performance feedback so whilst I am not totally immune to corporate downsizing it is less likely for me than others.

The role I am in is also in high demand, with a huge amount of poaching going on withing my little sector of the industry. Even in these credit crunched times I get 2-3 calls per month from headhunters who have heard of me and are trying to get me to move to competitor organisations - the last guy who called offered to triple my current salary.

So, why don't I move? Should be a no brainer huh?

Not quite. Right now I'm one of the relatively few people left in the world with a final salary pension scheme that will give me 2/3rds of my finishing salary if I retire at 60. If I stick my hand up for WFR in 2 years time, I will also have 30 years with the company and although my pension will be reduced through retiring 5 years early, the severence package I get will be around £100,000 which will be more than enough to pay off my mortgage (which is within 5 years of completion anyway). Without a mortgage, even a reduced pension will give me the same disposable income (in fact slightly more) than I have now and it is index linked to inflation.

In the industry I work in, poaching heads is rife, but it is often done speculatively on the likelyhood of the company landing a specific contract. If the contract is signed the company needs to be fully staffed with experienced people to hit the ground running, so it has to hire the staff it needs up front. If the contract falls through, or is nabbed by a competitor at the last moment, guess what...all those staff that have just been taken on will be surplus to requirements and unlikely to be absorbed into the company.

So if I jump, even for triple salary, I would never get a final salary pension to go with the job, and could easily find myself drawing a big pay check for 3 months then getting made redundant - without any length of service to give me a decent severance package

I'm a "Headhunter" in real life! Have been for 20 years and have been through a few recessions... my advice to you folks considering making a move...DON"T
Why you ask, well for one, the grass is not always greener across the street/next door. Two, the devil you know is in many cases, better than the one you don't!
And lastly and this is the key reason... last in, first out! Should you new employer run into difficulties, the last person hired will be the first person out the door.
Food for thought!
