How much was the most expensive beer you ever had? (WARNING: Beer content :-)!

I'd had a bad day at work last week (any excuse ) and decided to treat myself to a really special beer on the way home. My favourite beer producing nation is actually Belgium, although here in Germany, it's pretty hard to find imported Belgian beer anywhere . Luckily, there's a Belgian theme bar in the centre of town, so I stopped off there for a quick glass of Leffe (tasty ).

As I was leaving, I noticed three large bottles of Chimay beer (probably my favourite, ever) sitting on top of the food counter. It wasn't on the beer menu, but I asked the waiter if they sold it and he said that they did and that he could wrap me a bottle to take away if I wanted one. That should have made me instantly suspicious , but I was so stoked at the thought of settling down in front of the laptop for a night of TB and premium ale (is there a better way to live ?), that I eagerly agreed.

When he came back with my gift-wrapped bottle of "Chimay Blue" and asked me for €12 ($15 ), I just acted nonchalantly and handed over a 20, as if paying 15 times the amount that a bottle of store-bought beer cost was an everyday occurrence for me .

Needless to say, it tasted pretty good (albeit a bit too honey-sweet and sugary ). After I'd finished it, I sat and wracked my brain, trying to think of when I'd ever spent that much on one bottle of beer before - I don't think that I ever had !

So, how much have YOU spent on a single beer, what was the story () and was it worth it?

It doesn't have to be a "take away" beer either, I'd be more than happy to hear your stories of how "a beer" has ended up costing you a lot of money .

Here's the offending article, BTW ....

Mmmm, thirsty now .....

I've drunk 30oz Chimay bottles that were about $40AUD, I suspect its about the same price as what you paid. HOwever, i've also been at resturants that charge over £10 for a bottle of standard beer, so its more about where you pay it than what you get for your money. I used to have a 6 pack of 1998 Coopers Vintage. That stuff was incredibly valuable, but I drunk it!

Soon enough, someone will have a story about doing something that cost them a lot of money while they were drinking beer.

The most I've spent on a single beer is getting nailed for the afforemntioned "regular beer" at an expensive place.

I reguarily drink Erdinger though, which is a bit more expensive than most bottled stuff from an off-licence here.

Here a 750 ml of Chimay Reserve is 10$ (CAD).

Well, the most expensive one will be Kate the Great that I'll go get in Boston this summer (2 brew per year, each brew lasts for like 4 or 5 hours).

$11 dollars for a pint of Yuengling at an Allmans Concert in Camden. It didn't matter what the price was. I needed some yueng to further amplify the groove....and cotton mouth sucks.

Most bottles of Belgian beers that size (chimay duvel orval, delirium tremens) will run about $11 where I shop. I buy beers around that price once a month or so as well as 22s of American craft beers fro between $4 and $10. And Samichlaus is around $6 for a 12 oz bottle and I bought a few of those recently.

But those are prices I'm fine with. It's paying $8 for a plastic cup of MGD at a basketball or baseball game that really bug me.

The most expensive beer I've ever had I didn't actually pay for. It was a bottle of 2005 Utopias from Sam Adams. I think the bottle originally sold for $100 but now goes for double or triple that. I had a half a glass with some of my regular drinking buddies.

I dont have any, but a friend of mine got drunk, went to a tittie bar, ran out of money, phoned his bank up at ~1am, set up his account for telephone banking, then extended his overdraft limit so he could take out more money to spend.

Watching a fully qualified electrician spend most of a months wage in a night was fun

To be honest, the Red lable Chimay might have been a better choice . The bar I was in had Red, Blue and Blonde "Grande Reserve" Chimays, but I simply chose the strongest one (9%) . Next time, I'll try the red, I think - it's probably a bit smoother.

That's funny! Erdinger is (obviously) really cheap here. A crate of 24, 50cl bottles costs €9,99 (excluding the deposit for the bottles). That makes it about about 20 times cheaper than the Chimay Blue .

Thats exactly why I mentioned it!

I had to get it special order at first, fell in love with it after a trip to Germany. That or Kulmbacher(sp?), another tasty beer.

I was in Narvik (Northern Norway) in 1998. I stopped in for a pint at a pub and paid ~$13 CDN for it. I cannot recall much about the beer, just that it was very costly.

Some of our local breweries are doing specialty batches and selling small wine glass/snifter portions. Can't remember if the last one I bought was 7 or 9 oz., but I think it was around 7-8 bucks. Well worth it to me, it was a 13% barleywine that had been aged for a couple of years.

Turns out that this place is starting an anniversary binge tomorrow, rotating many of my favorites from the last few years: http://www.walkingmanbrewing.com/ . Ruh-roh!

$5 for a 12oz cup in vegas. I almost paid $6 for one, but the bartender helped me out and directed me to an ABC store around the corner and gave me tips on how not to get kicked out of the casino for walking around with it (i wasn't gambling, just drinking and people watching). i'm pretty cheap with my beers.
