London, Apr 28(ANI): Jamaican-born singer Carl Douglas has blasted a British pub singer's arrest for singing his classic chart hit 'Kung Fu Fighting', insisting that "it's not racist song."
Simon Ledger was arrested in the Isle of Wight, the largest island of England, on suspicion of racism for singing the disco classic, the Sun reports.
Ledger was singing at the Driftwood Beach Bar in Sandown on Sunday when a Chinese mother and son, reportedly walking past the bar, took offence.
Douglas, whose song hit number one in both the UK Singles Chart and the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 in 1974, said: "I couldn't believe it. This is not a racist song. It's a happy, kicking, disco song."
"I have Chinese cousins and my sister is married to a man called Tony Chang. Why would I sing a song that could be interpreted as racist?" he added.
Earlier, a Hampshire police spokesman had said that Ledger was arrested on suspicion of causing harassment, alarm or distress under Section 4a of the Public Order Act 1986 after a 32-year-old man of Chinese origin claimed that he was subjected to racial abuse.
"If a victim believes that an alleged crime is racially aggravated, the police will treat it seriously. Investigations into this incident are continuing," the spokesman had said.
