How reliable are money orders?

Sign in to disble this ad
Figured I'd ask you guys as I'm on the computer and don't feel like calling the bank at the moment. Believe me I'll get around to it but I figured, I'm on the computer, lots of you guys use ebay, hence the thread. Anyways I'm selling my Ibanez GSR200 on ebay as I never use it compared to my SUB and I wanna jump off a pedal board . Was planning on just accepting paypal but I got a message asking if I would take a money order. Experiences?

Sounds good so far. So none of you guys have ever had a money order bounce or gotten a counterfeit one?

USPS Money Order only!

I would not accept one from a bank or Dave's Money Orders or anywhere else.

No, never.
I would request a postal MO though for the added safety factor, but I never had any problems whatsoever with them

WARNING yes there are counterfeit US Postal Money Orders all over the place these days. If somebody offers to pay you with a money order, (a) insist on a US Postal Money Order and not one of the ones from the 7-11 or Quikee-Mart; and (b) when you receive the M.O. take it to the Post Office and cash it. Do not ship any goods until you have got actual cash in your hand. Do not deposit the M.O. at your bank.

I was just at the post office a few weeks ago and a guy brought in a M.O. he had gotten as payment for an item he was shipping. The clerk asked for his ID, then photocopied the ID and the M.O. and informed the guy that the M.O. was counterfeit and he had two choices: surrender the counterfeit M.O. and walk away, or face charges.

If he had deposited the M.O. at his bank he would be charged a fee and would probably have faced legal charges. If he had already shipped the item then it would be gone forever with no payment.

I definitely would not ship without the actual money in my hands. I don't trust people that much haha. Thanks for the heads up on the counterfeits though even though I read about them when I wikipedia'd money orders a minute ago I have never heard anyone talk about them before that. I guess the plan is that I'll take Postal Money Orders but won't ship until it's cashed and if it's fake then relist the item.

If youre going to wait until theyre cashed why not accept any money order, after all, you'll have the cash before you ship it.

I used to pay my bills via money order when i didnt have a checking account, I got them at the liquor store by my house, they use Western Union, which is a pretty reliable wire service, and I never once had a problem.

I dealt once with Western Union, but I gotta say that a M.O. from USPS is pretty safe.

People I've bought stuff from sometimes will accept a M.O. from my credit union. I always give them the website and the phone number so they can call and verify it.. And of course, ya can't go wrong with a USPS m.o. Yeah... better cash it FIRST thou, even thou it's deemed "safe"... I stopped buying Western Union M.O. . . Sellers generally don't care for those much, so lesson learned.

I pay all my bills with money orders I get at Walmart. Only 45 cents each, they never ever bounce, and they're always accepted.

Of course, because the utilities know where you live and they can ding your credit rating if you fail to pay legitimately, and they will send you to jail if you screw them with a counterfeit money order. Nothing whatsoever to do with the OP's situation.

Hey folks, it's your friendly neighborhood USPS employee here.

A USPS money order is a great way to go for a couple of reasons. First, any post office will cash them and second, you can take them to the post office and have them check the validity of the MO. I've seen several decent forgeries within the past couple of weeks, but none were good enough to fool me. In both cases, they were payments for craigslist deals and the recipients were smart by having them checked out by us. The funny thing was that the 'buyers' of both these transactions were from out of state, maybe even out of the country!

If anybody tries to tell you that they can't get a USPS money order, they're full of it. With as many post office branches out there as there are 7-11's, it's worth the peace of mind and extra time to get one and even better to receive one.
