How to slow or stop Male Pattern Baldness?

Sign in to disble this ad
Well I have MPB on both sides of the family so I'm kind of screwed. Just turned 25 and recently I've noticed a little bit of thinning on top.

Is there anything out there that ACTUALLY works to slow the progression of baldness? Yes, I'm planning on rocking the cue ball Bruce Willis style, but I'd like to delay that as long as possible.

well... rogaine will slow it down... but you'll be stuck using it the rest of your life. Stop using it, and the hair will gradually go away again. Other than that... no clue.

True story: My grandfather saw an ad in the paper that said "Find out how to avoid falling hair, for just $1". He sent in his dollar. A couple weeks later, he got a postcard in the mail that said "Step to one side."

One of my bald friends said that when he was thinning around age 21 a girl told him "Get six pack abs, no girl will ever care about your hair." He took the advice. Trust me, it never held him back.

I come from a family where MPB hits in at a very early age. My dad went bald at 21, and my older brother went bald at 18.

I'm 23, and my hair is unsurprisingly thinning - BUT I've been able to keep it in check with the following products:

http://www.amazon.com/Nioxin-System-.../dp/B00138Y0FY

I only use the "Cleanser" and "Scalp Therapy". The Cleanser is a shampoo, which kills any DHT (dihydrotestosterone, the cause of baldness) on the scalp, and Scalp Therapy infuses your hair with vitamins and acts more like a conditioner. I cannot express enough how great the Cleanser product is - it's what I attribute to having hair still at this point, TBH.

And then there's this:

http://www.kerastase-usa.com/_en/_us...nsitive_GL.htm

This is only for stylistic purposes only - spray a couple of times and your hair will appear thicker than it does normally. It provides no health benefit, it just makes your hair look thicker.

Of course theres also Rogaine. I only started rogaine two months ago, and honestly I wish I had started earlier - I already notice results and I'm quite satisfied with my use of rogaine.

As you probably already know, these will only delay the problem and not "cure" it - but if genetics are any indication, I've made my hair last a few more years longer than my brother and my father. In fact, I don't see myself shaving it until a few more years, at this rate.

Just go bald gracefully. You will seem old and wise beyond your tender years.

So the process of balding now got its own fancy term? When my hair starts falling, I'm going to skin myself and continue doing that. That way, noone can see that I am in fact balding.

it's been an established medical term (androgenic alopecia) longer than you've been alive. your ignorance to it is not due cause to be snarky.

My three cents:

- I went bald very young. While it happened over several years, I could actually detect the Start - at friggin age 15.

- If I was at the Start of loss, I would use Rogaine. It does appear to at least slow it down for lots of people. Plus - it's very safe. It's actually a blood pressure med, so it will probably give you better pressure.

- It sucks, but, you'll get over it.

- When it Does get severe, key is: not fighting it with a comb over. That looks horrendous. When it goes, just buzz the rest off.

- If you get through life with this being your worst physical/medical issue, you should count the blessings.

Really, it's not that bad. Many ladies don't mind, If it's handled right. You don't want the George Costanza Bozo little bit of hair on each side look. The ladies don't like that. Buzz it, and it's all good.

Put a chain-link fence up around the trouble spot... that should keep the baldness out.

Yeah... I know... but consider the subject matter...

I still think it's stupid to make a medical term out of something as normal as balding

Agreed. I started losing my hair when I was 16 (I'm 49 now), and it was GONE by 22-23. Whatever you do, don't get a rug. There is no such thing as a good one. Buzzing it (or shaving off the rest) is the way to go.

I have no experience with the second one, but I tried that Nioxin system stuff. That crap does nothing. If you actually read the pamphlet that comes with it, it says something to the effect of 7 out of 10 people perceive that their hair looks thicker. It's only about perception. It didn't do anything for me except drain my wallet. (BTW, I tried the system for over 1.5 years with no changes.)

Just let it go. Nothing looks worse than a guy trying to hang on to what's left of his hair. I don't currently have this problem and my family history says I won't, but I already shave with the closest guard on my trimmer. It's easy, saves money as I do it myself, and it looks good. Easy to wash, etc. I don't know if/when I'll "Bic" it, but if I have a good shaped head I'll give it a shot - when/if the time comes.

I'm the founding member of "Locks For Cold Hard Cash... and Lots Of It!!"

I shave my full head of hair weekly and then send the clippings (Elmer's Glue not included) to that week's auction winner.

Nothing like a stick on hair patch to impress the gals.

unless you want to pop for surgery, not much......the six pack abs/shaved head route would be preferable and cheaper......as some hollywood guy said.....you can be bald,or you can be fat.....but not both
