I'm in my 30th year of teaching, 28 1/2 with Detroit Public Schools, (bass player since 1976), but I just wanted to show my bass playing brothers and sisters how Detroit teachers are treated by the present "powers that be" in Detroit..................
........Oh, this year they have taken away compensation to teachers who have been physically attacked/injured by students in Detroit. On the first day the teachers came back to work for this year the Union Rep told us. "DON'T BREAK UP FIGHTS! DON'T MAKE ANY MOVES THAT COULD GET YOU HURT. JUST SAY, 'DON'T FIGHT, STOP THAT', AND THAT'S ALL YOU HAVE TO DO."
The Blackboard Jungle comes full circle. Detroit teacher who was attacked in the classroom now faces a disciplinary hearing

It reminds me of something I heard Tom Peters say once: "Ninety percent of what passes for management in America consists of making it harder for people to do their jobs." |

There are people going to jail for accusations by children, daycares facing charges by suppositions made by child advocacy "experts", parents losing children because of accusations made by some bystander who saw a swat on the rear and screamed child abuse.....Please.....

Reality knocking at the door of the Apathetic. | My ex-wife got a temp restraining order against me because she went to the court and filled out a form stating that I was "mentally unstable and had talked about buying a gun". She wasn't required to provide any proof of anything, and the restraining order was just rubber stamped and granted. I have never been arrested, haven't been in a fight since jr high, and have never owned a gun. I had to hire an attorney and sort it out, and didn't get to see my 4 y/o daughter for 2 months until it was dropped by the court due to, guess what, lack of evidence. So I basically got screwed and no one cared.
The system is out of control in so many ways and needs to be fixed. At least you're close to retirement... you ARE close to retirement aren't you?

| | | | See and the teachers at the cut throat prison like Detroit Charter I work at think they have it bad.
Students who fight here are immediately taken by police and expelled. Students who attack staff are taken down to the ground by security.
Non Union Charter Schools, they're FTW!
Sure they pay is much much lower but the administration has your back and will go to court for you.
I don't know how some of the competent teaching staff (a rarity in and of itself) in Detroit actually do it.

I'm sorry to hear this. And yet, if you had attempted the same thing (as ridiculous as it is), I'd bet a very large pile of $100.00 bills that your claim would have been denied. |

His response to fights after trying to break one up and getting hurt was: "Let the little bastards kill each other." He was a great instructor, but he was never going to get between two fighting students again.
If you came to class and tried to learn, he was great. If you didn't make an effort, he didn't have time.
