How to tell what kind of iPod I have (it's pretty old)

I have an iPod that I got as a birthday present 5 years ago. It's a 40 GB model, doesn't do pictures or video, doesn't show album art, etc. I know it's not a nano, mini, or touch and it's old enough that it's got to fall into the 'classic" line. However, when I was looking at some accessories I saw them talking about compatibility with the 4G, 5G, 5.5G, 6G, but I have no idea how to tell what "G" mine is. It predates all those other models so even 4G sounds too recent for it.

So .... ideas?

4th gen, pre-photo / color. Does it have a monochromatic screen?

unless it had 4 buttons above the clickwheel, which would make it a 3g.

Wow, that was fast!

No buttons above the click wheel, just the one in the center and the four buttons at the top, bottom, left, and right of the wheel. Yes, it's monochrome.

So it sounds like a 4G. Thanks!

Ah. that's a different story...if it looks like this:

it's a 2g. they adopted the all-inclusive clickwheel from the Nano on the 4g. Sorry for any confusion. Note the battery meter in the disply. awfully telling, eh? Hahaahaa

Looks like a 4G based on the page Mike referred me to. This photo on that page is the model I have:

Thanks for your help, guys.
