Question How or where did you make your first gay friend ?

Howdy Friends,

This might seem like an odd or irrelevant question but I hope some of you could share your experience of making your first gay friend. I was surprised at how many of my partners on patrol had never gotten to know personally a gay/lesbian person. After getting to know me and then finding out that I am they were much more comfortable with asking a lot of different questions they never had the opportunity to ask a homosexual person and as a result I they were able to break some of stereotypes that are known in popular culture.

My sister, and being that she's older than me, I'd have to say Day 1...but I don't have any memories of her before I was 3.

Freshman year of college, kid down the other end of the hall... nicest guy, was a little quirky, but a lot of fun to be around. Halfway through the fall semester, he told his closest friends he was gay, and you could tell who his real friends were. He was nearly in tears when he told me and my response... something along the lines "So? You're still the same person I chose to have as a close friend. This changes nothing" and it did change nothing.

Needless to say, he was great for helping us pick up chicks... Best wingman I ever met.

True!

My first openly gay friend was a guy I worked with at a motel. Great guy, good friend, didn't know he was gay until I had worked with him for a couple of weeks. There were actually 5 (openly) gay people working there at the time, out of 15 employees.

Haha it was more an Office quote than serious.

But to the original question, I don't remember the first gay person I met, I guess I just don't think about it enough to remember. I know maybe 10 gay/lesbian people now, just don't know who I knew first.

my brother. 4 years younger than me.

he was always different. he came out to me first. He was shocked that I didn't care and that I had figured it out years before he told me.

lets just say, when I was playing war and GI joe when I was young, he was playing house, and playing with my little ponies.

Aside from myself
My high school (1976) art teacher was the first openly gay man that I met, he was a great guy and a very inspirational teacher - Thanks Mr. Carey!

I'm trying to think of the answer to the thread's question and I honestly can't remember. It might have been Eddie, a guy who used to drink in my local bar and outrage all the neanderthal types by winking at them when they'd had way too much to drink. Funny stuff!

They have gay friends, they just don't know who they are.

Mine was (and is) one of two best friends in the world. Met him in high school about 1966...best friends for 45 years.

Christ, I really don't know. I've had quite a few guys and girls I grew up with come out later on down the line, some of them I'd already lost major contact with at the time. Its not really any sort of issue for me, so its not something I dedicate much of my memory to. The gay guys I know still get treated like one of the guys, the lesbian girls I'm friendly with.....well they seem to get treated in a halfway point between one of the guys and one of the girls. She gets treated like a lady, but we can talk about how attractive other women are together!

The first I can recall meeting who had already come out when I met her was when I was around 14, she was 16 at the time. She introduced to me to a girl I spent 5 years dating.....I later found out she had a crush on her too!

One of my good friends in high school realized he was gay after school (I think going to public school in Georgia in the '80s probably delayed him in that). Never bothered or surprised me. In college I met my first openly gay friend. Great guy, and yes, he was a pretty good wingman too.
