I wouldn't tell them. I figure everyone likes surprises.
In all seriousness, if I knew that I was checking out soon, I wouldn't want to spend my last moments surrounded by people who are sad and gloomy because they know I'm a goner. I would want to spend my final moments having fun and traveling and acting in a reckless and frivolous manner.
o I would cash out my IRA's and 401(k) and all of my CD's and savings accounts and spend my final moments having fun with no one the wiser.

A note on the fridge.

"Hey guys,

Just to let you know, we're out of milk. Could someone please pick some up? Also, I'm dying. Don't forget to get milk!

Me"

It all hinges on this question...( How well are you prepared for your impending death?)
