Are humans the only animals to have belly buttons?

If yes, why?

If no, post pics.

From 'Kipedia: The navel (clinically known as the umbilicus, also known as the belly button) is a scar on the abdomen, caused when the umbilical cord is removed from a newborn baby. All placental mammals have a navel. It is fairly conspicuous in humans.

Here's further explanation for monkeys: http://www.monkeymatters.com/article...ns/buttons.htm

My pug has a belly button.

I won't take a picture of it and post it on the net... she's got some body image issues since she's gained a few pounds.

Horse with an outie button:

This is starting to feel like a bestial navel fetish thread.

All mammals have em, they just get covered in fur and harder to see. And all male mammals have teats too. Again, covered in fur and hard to see. Don't worry.......no pics of those

Umbilical cord = belly button

We have nipples because we originally start off as a female in the womb and then develop into a male.

Sorry, but that answer is not biologically accurate. Your gender is determined at the moment of conception, so males do not "start off" as females. But it is true that embryos develop in stages, and so some male charcteristics will develop after other anatomical features.

http://www.scientificamerican.com/ar...n-have-nipples

The very best discussion of this I ever read was an essay entitled "Male nipples and clitoral ripples" by Stephen Jay Gould, but I couldn't find an online version with a quick search.

From the article that BassyBill referenced......

"Like all "why" queries, the question of why men have nipples can be addressed on many levels. My four-year-old daughter, always suspicious of a trick when asked such obvious questions, answered: "because they grow them." In search of the trick answer, she quickly added that "chests would also look pretty funny with just hair.""

Out of the mouth of babes....lol

Because for animals to mate, they have to have the same or equivalent organs in all places.

Well, at least that's what my 7th grade science book said on the subject. It always sounded like BS to me, but I could never find more information on it, for or against.

Edit: Actually, after two minutes of thinking about this, it makes sense. Our DNA comes in two halves, both of which must be compatible. All traits must be accounted for, but how they show up is defined by the different ways they're written.

I am off to look through text books to decipher the difference in opinion of gender/zygotes. Because, I would have given the same 'inherent female' answer as above.

I am pretty sure all vertebrate embryos are inherently female, and only transition to male after the hormones (brought on by the gender producing chromosome, or temperature range as in TDSD) prime the cell to become male.

But maybe I am wrong....I will look for links....

Not all navels & teats are covered by hair, as not all mammals have hair. Such as dolphins. And yes, dolphins do have navels. I have seen one up close & personal.

Dolphins have hair on their nose and around the blowhole (as babies). But not around the navel, no.

The real question here is 'Do other animals collect lint in their bellybuttons like I do?'

I could probably knit a sweater or two from all the lint Ive pulled out of there.
