So I get up this morning and in my usual perusal of the web, notice that my alarms are going off- Tropical Storm Edouard is apparently on-track to become a hurricane, and looks to make landfall early Tuesday in Galveston as a Cat1. It is following the same path and formation as Hurricane Alicia did. Should be here tomorrow morning! We might start feeling the effects later on today. I'm hoping it speeds up some, the last thing we need is for it to become a "grinder", a storm that sits on top of us and grinds away, dumping rain for days...
I live near the Gulf, in fact, I'm 11 miles inland, north of Galveston. I'm only about 5-6 miles from water if you go east from my house, Galveston Bay is to the east of me.
So I have to get gas today, I need 15 gallons for the generator. If the power goes out around here (as it does in major T-storms), I won't be online much, though I will have my MotoQ (slow) and my Crackberry 8830 (still slow, but not as bad), both are Verizon. I hope their network stays intact! We have a couple small A/C window units that the generator can handle if we get too hot, but we'll have to share the power with the fridge from time to time. We should be OK, though I might have to stay at work in lockdown. I work in a power plant. Should be an interesting next few days...wish us luck down here on the third coast! |

Seriously, those things are the reason I live where I do (not that it's much better). I lived close to Morgan City, LA when Hurricane Andrew blew through. My Mom packed up and dragged me and my brothers up here to Missouri, because my oldest brother lived here at the time. I was 16.

Folks should have batteries and water available, and enough fuel to get through a few days without services."
I'm going to fill three 5 gal. cans with petrol after work (if they even let us out of the plant, might be on lockdown). I'm not "essential personnel", I am the next tier down, being IT. Talked to my Environmental Officer this morning, he has to be back at work at 1am this morning. He lives on the northwest side of Houston, so he has a drive. Most of the Operations guys are on ready alert, and some brought supplies. I think it'll be a flood event more than anything, our ground is pretty dry, which leads to runoff which leads to dumbasses trying to drive through chest-deep water, which leads to...a mild cleaning up of the gene pool! |

I'm also covering for the tech over at Cedar Bayou, who is out with oral surgery for a week. So I have three sizable locations.
We have 965 MW capacity here at Bertron, and we're a peak plant, (gas), not baseload. So we usually only run during the day, on the peaks. But we can take up some slack if one of the baseload plants' units goes down (they're coal plants, or the nuke by Lake Jackson). |

If the rain amounts match forecasts, we'll end up a half-inch below where we should be on the year. Oh, and I get to work from home today! | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
