HVAC Question: Sump Pump Function?

Sign in to disble this ad
62 inch water main broke just a couple of miles from my house a week ago. Power has been on/off all week for hours at a time as repairs crews worked around the clock (Coldwater Canyon).

Have two AC units, and the lower one started spouting hot air. AC tech came out and threw a switch, voila, cold air, citing the power outages as the probable cause.

Looking around he noticed that our sump pump is not working (i knocked it off the wall one night parking the car, use the garage as an impromptu storage for my cabs which I sometimes leave between the two cars). He wanted $500 to replace it!!!

I have the unit, and it appears as though all it does is push around the condensed water when it reaches a certain level.

Do I need to replace this or can I just run some tubing and water the plants outside with the water (garage door barricade an issue, perhaps)?

TB is great, ain't it?! Thanks in advance for your responses

Depends on how high off the ground the pump is. If it's high enough where it will drain out, no problem.

If not, get it replaced, or save yourself the 500 and DIY. It's not too hard.

Its about 2 feet above the garage floor and about 3.5-4 feet above the street level outside. Should be able to run some pvc and plastic tubing w/o problems, right?

you might have to punch a hole in the bottom of the drain pan, or jury rig something, but I see no reason why not.
