with Maki, I always thought he treated quantity / quality as mutually exclusive...but in this case, it's almost a case of "lowering your standards..." hahahaha....

In the book its a reference to "praying incessantly". You dont have to even believe the prayer you are repeating, you just do so and it basically becomes a part of you.

I'd say in this regard its not a matter of "lowering ones standards" but more of a "practice makes perfect".

I really think it applies to Maki's philosophy. A young man (or woman) starts out by bedding any and everything that comes his (or her) way. With time and experience on one's side, eventually you get to a point where you have the skills, and bedding some quality tail is just natural happenstance.

I'd go so far as to say that this is practical advice. Anecdotal (word of the day) evidence: In High School I was holding out for a piece of quality, unbeknownst to me thats like trying to build a house from the roof down. I stopped chasing that elusive dream and gave up going for the quality. I was young and just wanted to get laid. So I banged a little here, banged a little there. Then along comes this hot 37 year old ex-model. Then Im tagging this hot little number, albeit a little young for my tastes. There seriously isnt a girl Ive been with since then that wasnt at least a High 7, quality piece, and they all came with relative ease on my part.

Actually Matticus has it right and hover only has it partially right. Quantity and quality are NOT mutually exclusive. First, you lower your standards and tap everything that will let you. Along the way quality is inevitable. For some, quality might give one pursuing quantity pause, like suddenly tasting a fine piece of sushi at an all you can eat joint. Some might even stop and settle here. For the truly dedicated followers of quantity they push through the quality. Once you start tapping quality other quality starts to take notice and the quality starts attracting more quality in quantity. This is the equivalent of achieving zen or religious enlightenment through extensive prayer. In fact, the only difference between prayer and getting laid is that prayer pushes your worries into some abstract pie in the sky while getting laid simply pushes your worries into pie.

Of course, your results may vary.

hmmm, some similarities between prayer and sex:

you often get down on your knees
you often evoke the lord's name
they both work alone, with a friend, or in groups

differences?

You had me 'til here.

Everyone knows the 1-10 scale is nonsense. The only scale that matters is the 0-1 (AKA the yes or no) scale.
