I didn't take my own advice and loaned some stuff out.

Well, sort of. I guy I know was interested in several effect pedals. He asked if he could try them in a band situation. I said yes. A couple of weeks later he tells me he wants them and asks if he can pay me in a week or so. I said yes. This was a couple of months ago. Yesterday, I see him and the first thing he says is Oh man, The Blue Box died --I'm going to bring it back to you." I was pissed. I told him to bring everything back to me. I can't let you test drive my stuff till it quits.

Never loan anything out. No good deed goes unpunished.

Have him bring back your stuff and a working Blue Box or the cash to replace it. Then borrow one of his guitars until he does!

Why in the world did you allow that to happen? You should insist on $$$ MONEY for replacement.. and maybe even a rental fee from all that time he had your gear out.. You were WAY too accomadating. I'd check everything out very carefully now.. see what else may have "rental" issues. Oh boy...

Your "friend" needs to learn some basic tact.

People are idiots. But more importantly, people will step on you if you let them. You let him step on you when you didn't demand money or pedals after just a few days. Now you're letting him step on you again by accepting a pedal that he killed without charging him for it. That's on you. Tell 'im to cough up some bread for the bad pedal. If he doesn't...well, violence is not the best option. But it's still an option.

It's my fault alright. I put this out there as a "learn from my mistakes" scenario.

This is the result of letting people use your stuff:

Yes, that's a 1998 Custom Shop Les Paul.

I once let this girl test drive a car I was selling so she could try it out for a few days and she brought it back a week later with a bashed in door panel and said she didn't want it because she said it wouldn't start anymore (since she left the lights on overnight and the battery died).

Yes, that was a learning experience for me.

What do you mean "brought it back?"

It was like, he was going to be playing bass for a project we were doing- I said "hey, I need my guitar back"
He was like, "cool, I'll put new strings on it for you!"
I'm all like "cool!"

The nite of the show he shows up with the guitar and I open the case to make sure it's tuned...

I literally was seeing red- veins popping out of my head...

He said he didn't notice that. Didn't notice an inch long chunk of wood missing out of the headstock on the bass side. Looking at pics from our band's old website, the damage was there at least 4 months previous.

****er still hasn't made good on that- that was like 5 years ago.

It's a pretty guitar- I got a feeling it'll clean up nice.

Unfortunately such a clause may be impossible to enforce...unless you can be very wily and argue it was an implied term of your contract by way of it being a standard course of dealings...even then, don't count on it.

That is why I HATE borrowing--I'm the kind of guy where if something broke or crapped out,I would feel obligated to buy it,or at least get it repaired.

"I don't let people borrow, and I don't borrow things."
I say this all the time. And I always sound like a jerk. However, at least I don't sound like a raving lunatic outside their door at 11pm threatening to kick down their door and beat them with a sock full of soap.

forget bringing it back, I'd make him pay...or at least a rental charge
and whatever it costs to fix the broken pedal...

then when all that's done...I'd kick the living $#!^ out of him...ok maybe not, but I'd want to...
