About six months ago, an old friend of mine was killed by a drunk driver. Turns out, the man who struck and killed her and her boyfriend had already been arrested for two previous driving while intoxicated charges, which is why he was now facing life in prison (some drunk driving deaths result in lesser sentences when there is no prior record).

Anywho, he was released on bond and guess what...he gets killed by a drunk driver. Aint that a *****. Justice served.

i wouldn't call that justice, as much as a killer being killed feels 'good' on some sick level, when neither killer had the intent to kill, it's just more sad, alcohol-soaked people acting irresponsibly. that's not my notion of justice.

sorry about your friend.

Why can't it be all of the above?

Justice.
Revenge.
Sad.

people can perceive it a lot of different ways, so in that sense it is all of the above. i was just saying that in my view of justice- that is, a system of addressing actions or issues that go against common fundamental human characteristics and universal notions of decency, respect, etc, while still adhering to those characteristics- is something that doesn't encompass a drunk driver killing a person who killed a person while driving drunk themselves.

i don't see revenge there, really, because the acts were totally separate. but there's still that feeling of an-eye-for-an-eye kind of thing, which i think is disturbing and serves as a good example of hypocrisy- that is, denouncing the crimes of someone else and not looking at your own. when the crime is punished by the same crime, that's a very bad thing. well, i think so.

It's sad. But that's how life works sometimes.

My cousin went to jail for stealing cars. When he got out he was killed by someone who had stolen a car and was running from the police. Also very sad karma.

it am a firm believer in zero tolerance for drunk driving. if i were king there would be no plea bargain for a shorter sentence and mandatory jail time for DUI.

You're welcome in Singapore any time.

Offenders causing death or serious injuries can also be caned up to 6 strokes.

All those convicted will be disqualified from driving for at least 1 year, even if they have not caused any traffic accidents.
Apparently they are also seeking to tighten up these laws.

That was DWI #3 for this guy - so he gets zero sympathy from me. I would agree with your position if this were one unfortunate incident - but if you're driving drunk that often, you're asking for trouble.

that is indeed super lame. but when a person gets busted for dwi they shouldn't just sit in a cell. that's not a deterrent. they should be taught about alcohol and go through safety courses for driving, and of course lose their license for a length of time fitting the incident, but also pretty severe.

drunk drivers don't ask for trouble, they are trouble.

as for 'zero tolerance' policies? i have no tolerance for them. that's just not the way life works. and it shouldn't be.

The universe has it's own idea of justice. I suppose 'karma' is as good a word for it as any.

Remember this the next time you think no one is looking.

I agree.

Even though that may be counted as a kind of justice still doesn't bring your friends back.Sorry for your loss.
