I get the 2011 dumb a$$ award of the year!!

Sign in to disble this ad
Either that, or Im just a real prince!

Heres the deal.. I get home from work this afternoon, jump on craigslist to find a newly posted add for a Martin D-18 acoustic guitar $250.00 or best offer.

I call the number, a young person answers, I ask him a few questions about the instrument...... He tells me it is a 1960, that his dad bought brand new. Has the original case, is in very good condition except for the fact that the neck had a crack in it just below the headstock, other than that, it was great. He told me that another fellow was on his way to get it as we spoke.

Im not sure what compelled me to tell him to not be there when the person arrived, I guess I just did not want to see him ripped off! He told me neither his Dad or himself knew much about guitars, and they figured that was a fair price.

He asked me if I could top thier offer,.. I just told him that I thought it would be a good idea if he pulled the add untill he had done his homework a little better..

Am I an idiot? Or do you think I did the right thing?

( Im a firm believer in Karma Any thoughts?

Well, one could argue the "negative karma" you could have caused by telling the seller not to make the potential sale he had coming. Perhaps the guy buying it didnt know its value either, and just wanted a guitar at a good price. It was nice of you to inform the seller that he could fetch more cash for his gear, but it certainly isnt karma of any sort. Karma wouldnt concern itself with such trivial things.

In other words:

I'm a big fan of scoring a deal, but also a fan of fairness. I would have done the same thing.

I did think about the perspective buyer, and it did make me feel a bit bad.. Its just that I could not stand the thought of this father and son getting so screwed here.

Perhaps I should have just stayed out of it, but its not like I tried to score it for myself, dont get me wrong, I would have loved to have had it myself, ...... but not like that.

I would have taken my bad karma to the bank, along with the grand I would have made off that guitar.

Peace,
Greg

No. You're not an idiot. Think of the alternative: you would have swindled (or allowed a person to swindle) a person out of an important item. If you don't look out for people, who else will?

(Would it have been wrong for loan agents to tell clients that they shouldn't refinance their homes in such a bad time?)

(I'm might be too stern about this...)

I would have definitely topped the offer and bought for myself. But hey, you did the right thing, unlike me

I would've jumped on the deal, but not to flip the guitar. I would've kept it, and loved it, and never felt bad about it at all.

But that doesn't make you a dumb a--. I can live with stuff like that. Maybe you can't!

My wife called me a moron.... but I turned it back around on her, telling her that I thought she would freak if I walked in with another " I promise..... this will be the last one dear"

You could have offered him $500 since he asked for a bid. Due to the repair needed, it would probably be a good deal both ways.

Since you did not see the instrument you really don't know that they weren't scamming themselves and it may be a fake Martin.
